Signs You Need a Birth Class

February 9, 2024 //  by Hilary Erickson, BSN, RN

All articles are written/reviewed by pregnancy expert Hilary Erickson, BSN-RN, -- a nurse since 1997 with 20 years of labor and delivery experience. This is medical info, not advice. Consult your provider for expert advice on your own health decisions.

You may be wondering a birth class is really for you? Today I’m going to share 4 signs that you need to take a birth class, and will have a better birth than you would otherwise.

Before we get started, I think this is the best birth class you’re going to find. It has proven to make people have less anxiety. Ok, but let’s get ONTO the signs!

You Have a Partner

A lot of people think that their internet research is going to be enough. And frankly, it very well could be. I would guess about 90% of this class’s information is available online in other forms.

BUT are you going to do all that research WITH your partner? Are you going to send them every video you learn something from, every article that gives you insight? Are they learning with you?

Many people think they are the only ones that need to understand birth but when you do birth as a team you’re starting your parenting journey as a team.

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I wanted more than a teammate when raising kids.

This class actually has bonus videos for partner tips, baby care & sleep tips — stuff that’s just for them!

I just want to categorically state that birth class is NOT just for the person giving birth, it’s for the other person who will be in the room. That way they can encourage you, remind you of things and cheer you on (rather than sitting nervously in their chair thinking something’s going wrong). As someone who’s been at thousands of births, I know that this is FAR too often the case!

It will strengthen your relationship and allow you to manage the highs and lows of pregnancy, birth and beyond together.

You Have Any Higher-Risk Issues

Are you needing:

  • 3rd trimester testing (NST’s or BPP’s)
  • An induction
  • A c-section
  • Extra ultrasounds to check on things with baby

It’s just EXTRA important to have a birth class in that case.

I bet you’re wondering WHY?

It’s just with all of those you have more choices in the matter. Should you get induced NOW or in a week. Do you need a C-section now, or can you wait? Should you get that extra monitoring?

Knowing how to talk with your birth team, what interventions you might expect and what’s normal can really help you make those choices with confidence!

And THAT, my friends, is a good feeling.

So, I always extra-encourage people who have any of those things going on to get a class in.

You may be thinking but HILARY, I just don’t have time to spend a full Saturday or every Tuesday for a month at 6 pm taking a class? I get that, which is why I recommend this one that can be done in just three hours whenever you’re available. I get you, I want to help!

What people love about the Online Prenatal Class for Couples

You Have Prior Birth Trauma / Healthcare Trauma

Ok, have you had a previous birth that went wrong, or some healthcare stuff that gives you the heebie jeebies (or worse)? A birth class can REALLY help.

I call it the scary stack. You just have a lot of things that you think are wrong, or are unsure about starting to stack up. It’s like how a day just keeps getting worse, except with healthcare things may actually be very normal. Things we do in the hospital can seem really scary.

Getting IV’s, having monitors and nurses watching them like hawks can seem really scary, but it’s all very normal. Once you know what’s going on behind all of that it can really seem normal to you too.

Previous poor experiences can only add to all of that, it’s just going to be SO much better if you take a class. The good news is this class actually comes with a guarantee. If you get in it and you’re not learning anything more (or hate the teacher) ask for a refund!

You’re Pregnant

Yup, I really think if you’re pregnant a birth class can improve things. You’re going to feel more confident, more aware, and more trusting of your team.

The other thing is, that when you take the right class you’re also going to learn more about postpartum. WHICH, gets more complicated the more babies you have. This class has a couple of chapters AND a whole extra lesson on postpartum health.

The reality is most people don’t take a birth class, but most of those people then rant “no one told me __________”, they have harder times coping with what postpartum life likes look, and they feel frustrated by a health care system that sometimes needs some extra learning to navigate.

In 2014 I taught birth classes for my hospital. I loved it. The couples loved it. But I knew they were miserable after trying to find parking, starving after working and sitting on the world’s HARDEST chairs known to man.

I knew it had to change. In 2016 I launched my own class — The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. THE CLASS that is the fun way to get prepared for birth. In just three hours you can feel more confident about your birth and I know you want that.

So THIS IS YOUR SIGN. Sign up for the class right here!

And, if you’re not quite sure you’re ready for that whole thing, check out the free lesson from it. It’s your first step toward getting in the driver’s seat of your birth.
