Studies have shown that eating dates in later pregnancy can have many benefits. In this article we’ll talk about the benefits of eating dates, how to best consume them (so you aren’t dreading it every day) and what studies have shown about dates putting you into labor?

I 100% get being SO tired of being pregnant and looking for a way to get that baby out — but IS dates the right thing for you? — let’s talk about it!

When Should I Start Eating Dates During Pregnancy?

Studies have shown that eating dates starting at 36 weeks has some benefits towards going into labor (don’t worry, we’ll talk more about that).

But, you don’t have to just start at 36 weeks. Dates are high in calories and nutrients that your body needs during pregnancy, and they may be able to prevent gestational diabetes and regulate blood sugar levels. Additionally, eating dates during pregnancy has been linked to a host of benefits for both mom and baby, including a shorter labor and easier delivery.

Of course, as with any food, it is important to incorporate date fruit into a balanced pregnancy diet and eat them in moderation. Many experts recommend eating 6-8 dates per day during the third trimester, but you can start eating dates earlier if you want to reap their benefits throughout your pregnancy. So, go ahead and enjoy this delicious and healthy snack!

Wanting to know more about what could put you into labor — check out these posts:

What are the Benefits of Eating Dates During Pregnancy?

Eating dates during pregnancy can provide many benefits to expecting mothers.

Dates are high in:

Vitamin C

Vitamins B-1 (Thaimine) and B-2 Riboflavin

and Niacin

And Vitamin A

Potassium (great for your muscles and blood pressure)

They are also full of antioxidants including carotenoids and phenolics

They are also REALLY high in fiber that can help promote a healthy digestive track.

I actually mention dates in my post on how to avoid pooping in labor.

More on dates can be found here.

The studies show that dates do reduce your need for labor augmentation but did not expedite the onset of labor. Both studies showed no adverse effects of eating dates.

Can Dates Induce Labor?

There is no real scientific evidence that dates can induce labor — but this study showed some benefits:

Women who consumed dates had a higher cervical dilation (their cervix was more open) upon admission compared to those who had not eaten dates.

Spontaneous labor occurred in 96% of patients who ate dates vs 79% who did not.

The use of induction agents was lower in those who consumed date (just 28%) vs 47% of those who did not consume dates.

The early stage of labor was shorter in women who consumed dates vs those who did not.

This study recommended that you start eating dates in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy to reduce your need to for induction or augmentation of labor. That being said there was no reference to dates putting people into labor.

This study actually showed it decreased the amount of time in the active phase of labor (it did not show any changes to early labor or the pushing stage of labor). It did show an improvement on the bishop’s score (I share more about the bishop score in my post on 36 week cervical exams) but did now show any differences in the rate of cesarean section.

This study showed decreased lengths in the second and third stages of labor.

So, while there is some variance in when dates are effective in the labor process, they all showed shortened labors, and less need for augmentation with pitocin or induction of labor.

Why Would Dates Help Labor?

They think that date fruit act on the prostaglandin receptors, which may increase the uterus’s response to oxytocin.

If you’re loving evidence-based information about your pregnancy — might I ask if you’ve taken a birth class?

I know it can seem overwhelming. Birth classes seem to want you to work your whole life around THEM, but I have found a birth class that works for YOU instead.

If you’re….

Wanting to know details about birth so you’re not unprepared

Wanting to get prepared with your partner, and feel a little less alone these last few weeks

Want a birth class that covers all of it

The Online Prenatal Class for Couples is the class for you!

It can be done in short “bites” so you’re not overwhelmed, it’s created for couples and makes it fun to do together, and only takes a few hours so you can get on with your busy life!

Might I also add that if you’re feeling scared about labor — it really can stall things out. So, getting prepared can lead to better and maybe even earlier births!

Are Dates Safe to Eat During Pregnancy?

In most cases it would be safe to eat dates during pregnancy. Two areas to watch:

Any allergies to dates obviously mean that dates should be avoided.

If you have gestational diabetes please do talk with your dietician or nutrition counselor about if they are safe for you to eat (as they do have a high amount of carbohydrates, but may be safe when also eaten with protein).

What Kind of Dates Should I Eat?

When it comes to choosing what type of dates you should eat, there are plenty of options available. Dates are a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals and can be a great addition to your diet.

Some varieties of dates that you can eat include Medjool, Deglet Noor, and Barhi dates. These varieties are known for their sweet taste, chewy texture, and nutritional benefits. However, it is important to avoid dates that have added sugars or are coated with preservatives.

Read my post on midwive’s brew

How Many Dates Should I Eat?

In the study that I could find it showed that they asked participants to eat six dates/day in the 4 weeks leading up to their due date.

How to Eat Dates During Pregnancy?

Eating dates during pregnancy is considered to be highly nutritious and beneficial for both the mother and the growing baby. Dates can be eaten in different ways such as fresh, dried, or pitted.

One easy way to incorporate dates into the diet is by adding them to smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt.

Additionally, dates can also be used as a natural sweetener in baked goods or sauces (you just have to be careful about the carbohydrates in these types of goodies, especially if you have diabetes).

Stuffed Dates

While dates can be eaten alone, that may get to be kind of boring during pregnancy. A few ways I’ve seen dates stuffed:

Peanut butter

Goat Cheese (I’ve also had them stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon)

Both of those are great as they will add protein to your date snack as well!

Have other ways you love dates stuffed? — tell me in the comments!

Date Recipes

I did find this article from the LA times with lots of tasty date ideas to get them into your diet. It looks like their natural sugars can be used in a variety of ways!

In general I’d recommend consuming dates in late pregnancy (although throughout your entire pregnancy is also fine). Personally, I’d try to get down the six dates a day as recommended in the study starting at about 36 weeks. If you’re past 36 weeks, no reason not to start now. Although the studies are mixed on if women who ate dates had shorter first stage or second stage of labour it did seem to show that date fruit consumption decreased labor time overall.

BUT don’t forget to get your BRAIN feeling more relaxed about labor and delivery as well. Come join me in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples where we get you prepared for labor in just a few hours. AND feel free to eat some of your favorite date snacks while you watch it!

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I have fielded TONS of questions like this one in my time at the bedside with pregnant women — and I’ve done some research on why they might or might not be OK, so let’s get going.

But first, if you’re looking to get as prepared for birth as you are to eat your Cheetos, don’t miss The Online Prenatal Class for Couples where we prepare you from bump to bassinet!

Deciding To Eat Hot Cheetos

The debate over whether or not to eat hot cheetos is comparable to that of getting pregnant.

Pro’s of Eating Hot Cheetos

The pros are that the food tastes good. Many pregnant women like spicy or crunchy foods even more during their pregnancy.

Cons of Eating Hot Cheetos

The cons are that it can give you heartburn and upset your stomach.

The main issue with HOT cheetos is that they are spicy, which can cause heartburn.

That being said, Cheetos are a highly processed food that has a lot of dye and preservatives in them as well — so you may be taking some risk ingesting that type of food.

The Best Way to Eat Hot Cheetos When You’re Expecting

As one of the most popular spicy foods in the U.S., Cheetos are a fun snack for people of all ages. However, if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, it is important to know how to eat these hot snacks responsibly. Cheetos are safe for pregnant women and those trying to conceive as long as they follow some safety tips.

Pregnant or Trying To Conceive? Follow These Tips When Eating Hot Cheetos:

1) Always wash your hands before eating anything out of an open bag.

2) Make sure you use a napkin or hand towel when eating hot snacks (you don’t want to wipe your eyes with this Cheeto dust on them).

3) Eat only one chip at a time and take breaks between each chip — this will help your mouth/esophagus from becoming overwhelmed.

Should You Eat Hot Cheetos While Pregnant?

Beyond the spice level, I hear some people mention that the food is too loud for your baby’s ears.

Frankly, should we not eat celery or carrots while we’re pregnant? While the baby is in your stomach — these foods are loudest in your mouth, that’s pretty far from the baby’s ears.

Mostly pay attention to how you feel after eating the Cheetos. If you don’t feel great, or have lots of heartburn — consider switching to another snack instead.

Hot Cheetos During Pregnancy FAQ’s

Will spicy food put you into labor?
Not normally, but it will give you heartburn. They may not feel awesome being thrown up though — that’s often an issue with spicy food during your first trimester.

Is hot cheetos a normal one of the pregnancy food cravings?
I haven’t heard it much, but maybe if it’s coming out of the blue for you it’s part of your pregnancy cravings (but if you craved it before it may just be a you craving).

Is junk food bad for you during pregnancy?
I think everyone’s definition of junk food is different. However, having some now and then as a pregnant woman can be part of a healthy diet (just make sure you’re getting lots of colorful fruits and veggies too. If the FDA finds that a chemical is unsafe they will eliminate it from the US food system.
Are you a pregnant woman who is looking to figure out what on earth she can drink. Maybe it’s just getting coffee with friends, or what to do at a drinking social. There are isles FULL of drinks at grocery stores, but you’re not sure what is best. It can be confusing, but I’m here today to share some of the top drinks you can enjoy, even when you’re pregnant.

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I reviewed a lot of studies on beverages during pregnancy, and I’ve also talked to thousands of pregnant women about their experiences during their pregnancy — so I’m a great resource for this!

Grab my pregnancy safe eating guide:

What is safe to drink during pregnancy?

When pregnant, it is important to stay hydrated and get the necessary nutrients for you and your baby. It is recommended that pregnant women need to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water each day.

Water is the safest option for pregnant women as it helps keep your body hydrated, but other beverages can also be safe to drink during pregnancy.

When it comes to dairy drinks, the most important thing is to ensure that drinks are pasteurized and not raw or unpasteurized.

Milk, fruit juice, smoothies, herbal teas and even carbonated water can all be safe to drink during pregnancy.

However, it is important to avoid alcohol and limit your caffeine intake.

Sparkling water can also be a good option as long as it does not contain added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Additionally, calcium-rich drinks such as soy milk can help meet your daily calcium needs while pregnant. All in all, there are many safe drinks for pregnant women so make sure you stay hydrated throughout your pregnancy!

Let’s talk a bit more about what’s good or bad during pregnancy!

What drinks should you drink in moderation during pregnancy?

When it comes to some drinks during pregnancy, moderation is key. While juice, smoothies, sodas and flavored water are generally safe for pregnant women, they should be consumed in moderation.

Healthy drinks with no added sweetener are best for pregnant women. In addition to these drinks, try to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water is another great option as it helps to keep you hydrated and can help reduce any morning sickness or other symptoms associated with pregnancy.

Too much of any one type of drink (except for water) can lead to health problems during pregnancy.

What drinks should you limit during pregnancy?

When pregnant, it is important to limit the amount of other drinks that you consume. Herbal teas and green tea are safe to drink during pregnancy, however it is important to be mindful of the amount of caffeine in these beverages.

Generally, women should limit their intake to two cups of caffinated beverages per day. The American College of Obstetricians (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women limit their caffeine consumption to less than 200 mg per day. Although some providers don’t think it is safe to consume much caffeine at all in your pregnancy (so talk with your provider for what’s best for you).

For reference:

A cup (8 oz) of coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine

A 12 oz can of soda (in general) has about 34 mg of caffeine

A can of Dr of 41 mg of caffeine

An energy drink like Red Bull has around 81 mg of caffeine (some energy drinks have more)

For your reference: I found this helpful chart about how much caffeine drinks have.

As with any food or beverage choice during pregnancy, it is always best to consult your healthcare provider before consuming anything new.

Also, if you have risks like high blood pressure, that may limit even small amounts of caffeine.

If you like solid information like this, be sure to jump in this top prenatal class.
What are the drinks to avoid during pregnancy?

It is important to avoid certain drinks during pregnancy.

It is recommended by all major health organizations in the United States that there is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy as it can have a negative impact on the unborn baby’s development. And yes, this includes wine during pregnancy.

This may limit your exposure to particular people or events in your life (who are associated with alcoholic beverages). And obviously, you don’t want to be in a car with anyone driving under any influence. Ultimately, avoiding alcohol completely during pregnancy is the safest option for both mom and baby.

Other drinks, such as unpasteurized milk and juice, should also be avoided due to potential bacteria that may lead to food poisoning or other illness. To make sure that you stay healthy while pregnant, it is important to drink only pasteurized beverages.

A lot of people think that it’s OK to drink “non-alcoholic wine” (or other non-alcoholic beverages that are sold by the alcohol) — but these types of drinks aren’t alcohol-free, they just have less than a certain amount of alcohol. I guess regular wines have over 8% ABC, and non alcoholic wines may be closer to 1-.5% ABV — so it’s clearly less, but it is NOT none (even though many of those companies market their wine specifically for pregnant women).

As a reminder there is no known safe amount of alcohol use during pregnancy.

Why isn’t it safe to drink alcohol when pregnant?

It is not safe to drink alcohol when pregnant.

Alcohol can pass through the placenta, through the umbilical cord and reach your developing baby, where it can cause serious harm.

There is also no evidence that shows any amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. Even small amounts can damage a baby’s development and cause birth defects, including facial deformities, learning disabilities and heart, kidney or liver problems (called fetal alcohol spectrum disorders — FADS). Studies also so it can lead to low birthweight babies or premature labor (and premature birth). Large amounts of drinking or binge drinking can make the effects even worse.

It is best to avoid drinking altogether while pregnant to give your baby the best chance of developing healthy and strong.

If you are worried about drinking before you knew you were pregnant, talk to your health care provider for further advice on what steps may be necessary to help reduce any potential risks. The good news in that type of situation is that the less alcohol you drink the less your chances of an issue are. That should be a good consolation for someone who drank before they knew they were pregnant.

What to drink during pregnancy besides water?

Water should be your main source of hydration during pregnancy.

When it comes to what to drink during pregnancy besides water, there are many options available.

Herbal tea is a great beverage to drink while pregnant as it contains no caffeine and is packed with antioxidants.

Smoothies are also an excellent choice as they are packed with essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals that help you stay healthy during your pregnancy. Juice can also be part of your daily diet while pregnant (if you are not diabetic) – just be sure to check the label for added sugars or preservatives before you buy.

You can also opt for milk, soy milk or almond milk if you don’t prefer cow’s milk.

All of these drinks will help you stay hydrated throughout your pregnancy, so make sure that you’re drinking enough each day to keep yourself and your baby healthy.

As I said, water should still be the main beverage of choice; however, adding these other drinks will ensure that you’re getting all the nutrition and hydration necessary for a healthy pregnancy!

How much do I need to drink in pregnancy?

When you’re pregnant, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids.

Every day, you need to drink at least 8 glasses of water and other healthy drinks such as herbal teas, fresh fruit juices or fresh fruit smoothies. You should aim for about 1/2 of your weight in water. That means, if you way 200 pounds, you’re aiming to get in 100 oz of water (this can be a hard number to get to, but it will be worth it for how well you feel).

If you’re not into counting your ounces, be sure to check the color of your urine in the toilet, it should be a very light yellow. If it starts to get darker, you know you need to dink more!

At the end of the day, the best thing is to listen to your body and make sure that you stay hydrated throughout your pregnancy.

And yes, simple tips like this is what people love about The Pregnancy Nurse and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples.

Healthy Drinks During Pregnancy

When pregnant, it is important to stay hydrated. Healthy drinks during pregnancy can help keep mom and baby healthy throughout the entire pregnancy.

Drinking juices, coconut water, and herbal teas are all great options for pregnant women. Smoothies are also a good option for an energy boost in the morning or when dealing with morning sickness. It is important to be aware of what you drink during pregnancy as some drinks can harm the baby’s development.

Water is one of the best drinks for pregnant women to stay hydrated throughout their entire pregnancy journey. Juice is also a great option but make sure it is 100% juice with no added sugar or preservatives.

Coconut water is another great option as it provides electrolytes which helps with dehydration and keeps mom hydrated as well.

Many women turn to sports drinks during pregnancy. I have a whole post about if Gatorade is safe during pregnancy. While a lot of women think they need electrolyte drinks (or Powerade) to replace anything they’re losing during pregnancy. However, a varied diet and water intake should take care of your electrolyte needs unless you’re sweating a LOT.

Some women wonder if Ensure is a good pregnancy drink. I have a whole post about Ensure during pregnancy, but you should be mindful of the calories in that type of drink and if you need more fiber than it provides.

Herbal teas provide calming benefits which can help reduce stress levels while drinking them in moderation during your first trimester can also help with morning sickness symptoms.

All these drinks are healthy drinks during pregnancy that will help keep mom and baby healthy throughout their journey together. So don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated!

Best drinks for pregnant women

Ok, we’ve reviewed all your options, but it can still feel very limiting for pregnant women — so let me give you some great drink recipes that you can make to mimic some of your favorite drinks you had pre-pregnancy.

This Margarita Mocktail is a good alternative that many pregnant women have said they enjoy!

This Mai Tai Mocktail might be a fun one to enjoy at your baby shower!

This slow cooker holiday punch might be a fun hot beverage option at parties.

This Moscow Mule Mocktail has lots of ginger ale — a great option if you’re having some nausea.

This is the best way to enjoy times with friends or family, without having things you shouldn’t have.

One of my best tips (especially if you hate water) is to reward yourself with a different drink after you drink water. So a glass of water, and then a glass of orange juice (as long as you’re not diabetic), and then it’s back to water! It’s a great way to make water the majority of your intake, but also get enough fluids with things you enjoy.

Ok, those are my best tips for drinking when you’re pregnant. I know you can feel weird not have a coffee or a cocktail in your hand at certain events, but I know people admire you for putting you and your baby’s health first!

It is never too early to start preparing for birth.
Are you a parent who’s expecting and wondering what foods are safe to eat? You may have heard that ranch dressing isn’t recommended for pregnant women, but could this be true? In this blog post, we’ll explore whether or not pregnant women can eat ranch dressing and discuss the potential risks associated with doing so. With information from medical professionals as well as general advice on pregnancy nutrition, you can make an informed decision about consuming ranch dressing while pregnant.

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I know how confusing it is to figure out what you can/can’t eat when you’re pregnant and I know the basic safety guidelines to help you.

As always, talk with your provider about any eating guidelines for you during your pregnancy. That’s the best way to know if things are safe for you (and they can educate you on the actual risks/benefits in your area etc.).

Be sure to grab my safe eating tips here:

Is ranch dressing safe to eat during pregnancy.

While ranch dressing is generally safe to eat in moderation during pregnancy, it’s important that you know the ingredients used in your particular salad dressing.

Most store-bought brands contain pasteurized eggs which are considered safe for pregnant women, however some may also include raw egg which can contain salmonella bacteria.

Depending on how conservative you are about your eating during pregnancy — some store-bought brands contain unhealthy preservatives and other ingredients which may not be what you want for yourself.

Commercially prepared dressings are normally prepared with pasteurized eggs Or, you could make your own with mayonnaise that you know to be pasteurized (or take out the mayo).

At a restaurant, you may want to make sure it’s either commercially-prepared or not prepared using raw eggs (most often they note if raw eggs are being served though).

Eating small amounts of store-bought ranch dressing that does not contain raw egg is generally considered safe during pregnancy. However, it is always best to check with your doctor before consuming any type of food or dressing while pregnant.

Eggs in Ranch?

I know, I don’t think “eggs” when I think about my ranch dressing. BUT many ranch dressing types are made with mayonnaise — which is an emulsion of oil and eggs (meaning they whip the eggs quickly while they drizzle in the oil).

Eggs can be pasteurized before this process by raising their temperature enough to kill the Salmonela bacteria. It is done this way for Best Foods Mayonnaise (my personal gold-standard mayo — also known by Hellman’s) and most store-bought mayos are as well.

And yes — this seems more confusing than it SHOULD be. Let me help you simplify pregnancy in here.

What is ranch dressing?

Ranch dressing is typically made with a combination of mayonnaise, buttermilk, sour cream, garlic, onion powder, paprika, dill weed, and other herbs and spices. Most store-bought brands of ranch dressing also contain added preservatives to increase shelf life. While ranch dressing is normally served on salads, it can also be used as a dip for vegetables or chips.

How much ranch dressing can pregnant women eat

In general (as most people don’t eat ranch as a meal) having Ranch as a dressing or a dip should be OK. Some people may be sensitive to the sodium in it, but otherwise they should be fine. In fact, if you’re diabetic it’s a better option than many dressing out there. As always, check with your doctor to ensure that the amount

Are there any risks associated with eating ranch dressing during pregnancy

The primary risk associated with eating ranch dressing during pregnancy is the potential for salmonella infection. Raw egg, which could be used in a ranch dressing, can contain salmonella bacteria and can potentially lead to food poisoning.

However, unlike listeria (which is found in deli meats) salmonella rarely affects the fetus. You’d just have food poisoning which could be problematic due to dehydration. But, it’s not quite as dangerous as listeria.

Can Pregnant Women Have Blue Cheese Ranch Dressing?

This ones depends on if the blue cheese used in the dressing, and the milk (and possibly eggs) are pasteurized. Also, if the blue cheese is considered “soft” or “hard”.

Honestly, when I think about ALL that, unless you’re married to the idea of blue cheese dressing, I’d probably avoid it.

Blue cheese ranch dressing is made up of a combination of blue cheese and items similar to ranch dressing. The blue cheese gives it a distinct flavor and the ranch dressing provides the creamy texture.

Not all blue cheese dressing has eggs in it, but you can always ask, or check the bottle. But, the biggest issue would likely be the blue cheese in this situation.

All inter-state commercial milk products are pasteurized (except for some cheeses) due to their high propensity to have bad bacteria in the milk. You can learn more about the FDA’s regulation on milk in the US here.

Blue cheese can be made as unpasteurized (and as far as I can tell most blue cheese is NOT pasteurized), and if it’s a “soft” blue cheese it has a higher water content, which makes it more likely to have issues.

Most of the “popular” shelf dressings in grocery stores are pasteurized and made with a hard blue cheese. When in doubt I’d check with the company or your provider.

My favorite blue cheese is Bob’s Famous salad dressing and it appears:

The butter milk is pasteurized

The sour cream is pasteurized

The blue cheese is made from pasteurized milk

However it SEEMS to be Roquefort — meaning it is a “semi-soft” and should probably be avoided.

Bob’s is found in the refrigerated section though (vs a “shelf” dressing that doesn’t need to be refrigerated until opened).

So, if you want to make your own (which is probably the safest):

Use your own pasteurized milk/milk products, use a pasteurized mayonnaise and use a hard & pasteurized blue cheese.

Can pregnant women eat Caesar Dressing?

Pregnant women can safely eat Caesar dressing, but it is important to ensure that the dressing is made with pasteurized eggs and dairy.

If you’re unsure whether the Caesar dressing you’re planning on eating was made with pasteurized eggs or not, it’s best to check before consuming it just to be sure.

Also safe to consume while pregnant are store-bought or pre-made Caesar dressings that have been pasteurized. While these dressings may not have as much flavor as homemade dressings, they will still provide a delicious addition to your meal and are safe for pregnant women to eat.

Personally, I make my own Caesar dressing with my own Mayonaise and it’s so yummy.

Can pregnant women eat other dressings

Pregnant women can eat a variety of dressings, including vinaigrettes, herb-based dressings, and yogurt-based dressings. These dressings are typically lower in calories, fat and sodium than ranch dressing and often contain fewer preservatives. It’s always best to check with your doctor before consuming any type of food or dressing while pregnant.

How to make your own ranch dressing

You can make your own ranch dressing at home using pasteurized eggs, low-fat buttermilk, plain Greek yogurt and herbs such as dill weed. This homemade version is typically lower in calories, fat and sodium than store-bought brands and does not contain preservatives or other additives. You can also buy the packet of Hidden Valley Ranch and make it according to the directions. Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix just uses sour cream (which, as long as it is pasteurized is fine).

Phew, that’s a lot to throw at you for one simple question. I think your best bet is to grab this safe eating guide to help you mostly know what to avoid:

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I have talked with thousands of pregnant woman about their cravings during pregnancy and then they say — is it even OK to eat sour cream? So, let me answer that question for you!

Oh, and grab my healthy eating guide while you’re here:

Can you eat sour cream while pregnant?

The simple answer is yes, you can enjoy sour cream while pregnant. However, as with most dairy products, it’s best to choose a pasteurized variety that has been processed at a higher temperature to kill any harmful bacteria.

Be sure to check the label on your sour cream container to make sure that it states “pasteurized”. Additionally, it’s important to check the expiration date and consume your sour cream before it expires.

Some recipes call for Crème fraîche which is SIMILAR to sour cream (but I think a bit more tart and thinner) However, that one is less-likely to be pasteurized (although it looks like most varities are pasteurized that are sold in the US).

So, there’s your main answer — but keep reading to learn a bit more about sour cream, and also some alternatives that might “hit the spot” but fill a few more of your pregnancy nutritional needs.

Are there any risks associated with eating sour cream during pregnancy

When it comes to food safety while pregnant, the biggest risk is listeriosis. This is a type of infection caused by eating certain types of bacteria that can be found in unpasteurized dairy products. Though pasteurization greatly reduces this risk, it’s still important to check labels and expiration dates to make sure your sour cream is safe to eat.

Additionally, it’s important to practice proper food safety habits when preparing the sour cream, such as washing hands before and after handling it. Also, make sure that your sour cream is stored in a fridge that keeps a temperature below 40 degrees.

Of course, one of the biggest risks with pregnancy is forgetting stuff like this — which is why I have a super-fancy pregnancy planner.

What is sour cream and what are its nutritional benefits?

Sour cream is a dairy product made from fermenting regular milk cream with lactic acid bacteria. It has a thick, creamy texture and tart flavor that is popular in many dishes such as tacos and baked potatoes. While it’s generally considered safe during pregnancy, there are some nutritional benefits associated with consuming this food. Sour cream is packed with calcium, protein and Vitamin A, making it a beneficial source of these nutrients during pregnancy.

How much sour cream can you safely eat during pregnancy?

You may be craving sour cream at every meal — is that OK?

The amount of sour cream you can safely eat while pregnant will depend on your daily caloric needs. Generally speaking, no more than 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of pasteurized sour cream should be consumed per day. This serving size provides approximately 150 calories and 14 grams of fat, making it a great choice for getting essential nutrients like calcium, protein and Vitamin A in your diet. But, if you’re loving the tart cold taste of sour cream, there are some alternatives that might hit the spot too!

Sour Cream Alternatives:

If you’re looking for a way to get the same creamy texture and taste as sour cream without consuming dairy, there are a few different options worth exploring:

Greek yogurt is an excellent sour cream alternative due to its similar texture and tart flavor (it also has protein in it which is a big win when you’re growing a baby)

Additionally, there are many commercially available vegan-friendly sour cream substitutes made from ingredients like cashews, tofu or coconut

If you’re wanting sour cream a LOT — try a plain greek yogurt and see if that’s as good. If so, it tends to have less fat and more protein. For me, that works most of the time — but sometimes I just want that creamy sour cream texture.

Don’t forget to grab my safe pregnancy eating guide with more tips like this:

Some recipes that include sour cream for pregnant women:

I love these pineapple sour cream enchiladas

A tortilla soup might be yummy with a dollop of sour cream on top (I have a post all about the best soups for pregnancy if you’d like something different).

Tacos are an easy meal to make and can “tick” a lot of nutritional boxes (meat, cheese, veggies, sour cream makes this a good choice) — I share how I make mine in my post on 5 fast dinners.

If you’re in love with tangy foods, you could always try a sour cream coffee cake for breakfast!

Want something warm and sour-cream-y — try some stroganoff!

This cucumber salad would be a good way to pair some veggies with the tangy taste too!

In conclusion, it is safe to consume sour cream while pregnant as long as it is pasteurized and kept within its expiration date. While there are some risks associated with consuming unpasteurized dairy products, they can be greatly reduced by following proper food safety practices.

Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I have discussed with countless women how much they missed wine during pregnancy — so I’m well aware of the desire many people have to continue light drinking during pregnancy. But, I’m excited to review the literature with you and show you what the studies show

Come join me in my tailored-to-you pregnancy series right here:

And of course, this is just a literature review, you should always make your choices in conjunction with your provider during pregnancy.

Can You Drink Wine When You’re Pregnant?

The CDC states that there is no safe amount of alcohol you can have during your pregnancy.

The Surgeon General and the department of health has a warning on alcohol (or where alcohol is served) that pregnant women should not be drinking.

The American College of Obstetricians also backs-up the statement that there is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy.

A lot of people wonder if it is OK to drink alcohol later in pregnancy vs in your first trimester, but there is no differentiation between these governing bodies as to when alcohol use is safe for your unborn baby.

However, we’re going to dive deeper into what the studies show and how you can make the best choice for yourself.

Why can drinking wine during pregnancy be a problem?

Alcohol can cross the placenta, through the umbilical cord and reach your baby, who is much more vulnerable to its damaging effects. Alcohol can damage your baby’s developing brain cells and other organs, leading to lifelong physical, mental and behavioral problems. This is known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). This can also lead to abnormal facial features and more severe cognitive impairments as baby has more exposure to alcohol while in the womb.

What do they studies show about drinking wine when you’re pregnant?

There are numerous studies on alcohol’s effects on your developing baby. I wanted to review a few of them that both talk about light drinking as well as heavy drinking.

Effects of Alcohol on Adverse Fetal Outcomes

This study out of Ethiopia showed that there were poor fetal outcomes especially in relationship to low birth weight or premature birth.

For Low Birth weight, those who didn’t consume alcohol 10.25% of the babies had it, 15.18% for “non-hazardous” and 25.86% had it with “hazardous” consumption”

For preterm delivery 5.53% of the babies were born preterm with no consumption, 5.58% for non-hazardous, and 12.93% for hazardous consumption.

Why does low birth weight matter?

You may think that having a smaller baby sounds nice (less to push out) but smaller babies show that they aren’t getting as much nutrients or aren’t using them as effectively in the womb. Meaning the things they are developing may have issues.

Low birth weight is also known as SGA or small for gestational age or IUGR intrauterine growth restriction.

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Psychological or Behavioral Issues

This study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry showed that even light alcohol use (which in this study was less than 40 drinks during your pregnancy — so less than once a week) showed small but significantly “greater psychological and behavioral problems, including internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, attention deficits, and impulsiveness”

The amount of developmental problems the children had was related to the alcohol dose (or how many drinks the person had) and the timing of the exposure.

However, even light prenatal alcohol consumption may result in changes in neuro development.

But it did also mention that alcohol use during pregnancy often has a co-occurrence (meaning they see these in the same people) of other substance use (recreational drugs), early life stress on the child and not getting quality prenatal care. So it is definitely possible that those things are impacting the child also.

Low Alcohol Consumption and Pregnancy and Childhood Outcomes?

This review of the literature showed that the data is pretty sparse on those drinking less than 32 g/ week in pregnancy. But, because there is some evidence that it can cause low birth weight (often called SGA or small for gestational age) or preterm delivery they recommend against even small mounts of alcohol.

Is Any Amount of Alcohol Safe?

I thought this manuscript discussing some of the difficulties studying this issue was interesting.

Because we don’t fully understand fetal alcohol syndrome, and what it effects it is difficult to study what causes it.

They do say that concentrations of alcohol attained after a single drink in pregnant women disrupt the function of the developmentally critical L1 neural cell adhesion molecule (this L1 molecule plays a result in the formation of the nervous system).

Studies really vary in what they call light-moderate-or mild drinking (no standard between the studies, or in a social setting)

Genetics may play a role in the FASD — meaning maybe your mom drank during her pregnancy (and her mom, etc) and that could be carried through generations.

Most studies do show a correlation between the number of days of light-to-moderate drinking during pregnancy and the number of childhood externalizing problems (which is things like physical aggression, verbal bullying, defiance, etc) — so, the more people drank the negative impact on the baby was higher.

This issue could be enhanced by the paternalism in the OB community, or blaming the patient for something (meaning it’s easy for a male OB to say that you shouldn’t drink during pregnancy, because they have never had to stop drinking for pregnancy and don’t understand how limiting it can feel).

Also, because they are seeing a very small increase in issues with the lightest drinking, they do have to recommend against drinking during pregnancy (but perhaps it would be better to give the study results and let patient’s decide for themselves).

Be aware that most women are drinking before they know they’re pregnant, and even with the widespread distribution that there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy approximately 6-10% of women still drink after they know they are pregnant

The knowledge of the very low risk in just a few drinks should bring some reassurance to women who drink before they know they are pregnant

They also say that women should be encouraged, not stigmatized as they try to reduce their behaviors that might affect their developing fetus.

The CDC also has some key findings on alcohol in pregnancy.

If you like studies like this (that help you make up your own mind) come join me in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples where we share studies, as well as what to expect when you’re at the hospital to get you prepared for your birth!

Drinking wine during pregnancy faq’s

Is it OK to have a glass of wine during pregnancy?

Many people ask will one drink of wine affect my baby? However, all the governing bodies agree that there is no known safe amount of alcohol. Also, in pregnancy medical professionals always take a risk/benefit analysis and most often decide that the benefits of having wine do not outweigh the risks.

Also, often one glass of wine leads to two or even excessive alcohol consumption for some people. So, that is a consideration as well for baby’s health.

What kind of wine can you drink when you are pregnant?

While some people feel that non-alcoholic wine is fine for pregnant woman, you should be aware that the standards to be “non-alcoholic” are all that strict, meaning there is still some alcohol in that beverage. So, depending on how you view those studies — if you want to cut alcohol out of your life entirely you’d want to not consume any non-alcoholic beverages (meaning things found in the alcohol section labeled as such). These are still considered types of alcoholic drinks but do have less alcohol in them.

What if I drank before I found out I was pregnant?

As I mentioned above, studies show the risk is MUCH higher the more drinks you have. So, early usage of one or two drinks before you knew is likely to not be as problematic as those who drink throughout pregnancy. Also, there is nothing you can do about it now other than allowing baby the most healthy environment as you can now (which means decreasing your stress too).

What drinks should I avoid during pregnancy?

The CDC states that any amount of alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy. This includes drinks like beer, wine, and spirits. Additionally, you should avoid drinks with high levels of caffeine such as energy drinks or coffee. While these beverages are generally considered safe for adults to consume, they can be dangerous for developing babies.

When Can I Resume Drinking Wine?

When can I resume drinking wine? This is an important question to consider before you pick up that bottle of your favorite red or white. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidance on alcohol consumption. According to the CDC, adults should consume no more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. It’s also important to keep track of the amount of alcohol consumed to ensure that you’re not overindulging and creating any health risks.

In general, if you follow the guidelines set out by the CDC and practice responsible drinking, then it’s safe to resume drinking wine in moderation. However, if you have any underlying health conditions or take certain medications, it’s best to speak with your doctor about when it would be safe for you to start consuming alcohol again.

However, if you are planning to breastfeed there are considerations about alcohol in breastmilk. My friend Katie has a good post on alcohol and breastfeeding — alcohol does travel into breast milk, so this is an important read.

Also, if you have ANY amount of alcohol make sure that baby is not alseep in your bed, or you fall asleep while nursing. Aka, no co-sleeping at ALL when under the influence of any amount of alcohol.

The Final Word on Wine During Pregnancy

It is a hard choice for healthy pregnant women to make. The studies clearly show that binge drinking during pregnancy or large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can cause issues with the developing fetus. However, the studies are less clear on smaller amounts. But, because of the high-risk nature of growing a human, they believe the safest option is to abstain from alcoholic drinks during pregnancy.

Some women feel that the stress relief they get from a small glass of alcohol will counter-act the possibly implications that much alcohol may have on their baby. That is something you should definitely discuss with your provider. And perhaps consider alternatives that may be safer than an occasional glass of wine at a special occasion.

The reality is that you will have to live with whatever choice you make. I think most people don’t want the “what if” of making the choice to drink alcohol during pregnancy and then having issues with your child, either a small baby, or preterm birth or issues with executive functions or even further issues as they grow-up. This causes most women to plan for complete abstinence of alcohol during their pregnancy as it is a limited time and they can enjoy it later after baby is out of them.

But I am with you that this can be a hard choice. I hope that these studies helped you make up your mind about what you are going to do.

When it comes to inducing labor, many couples turn to eggplant. But does this method actually work? Here’s what you need to know about using eggplant as a natural labor inducer.

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I have seen lots of women hoping to induce themselves in various methods, and can report on their efficacy. So, let’s get down to it!

As always, you’ll want to talk with your provider before you try to do things to induce labor. They can talk about the risks and benefits of certain methods with you.

Does Eggplant Induce Labor?

Eggplant is a popular vegetable, and it is often used in recipes such as eggplant parmesan. Some people believe that eating eggplant can help to induce labor.

An Italian restaurant outside of Atlanta even created an eggplant parm dish specifically for women who were 39 weeks pregnant and looking to go into labor. Hundreds of women tried the dish, and many of them reported that they went into labor within 24 hours. Some even had what are known as “eggplant babies” – babies born within a week of eating the dish!

While there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that eggplant induces labor, many women swear by it. But, again that’s not evidence.

Let me repeat that there is zero evidence that eggplant starts labor. Now, is a different story. … we’ll talk more about that.

And if you’re someone who wants to know what ACTUALLY happens in labor rather than what a lot of women think happens — come join me in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples where we give you the REAL info on labor (and you can do it while eating eggplant parm, if you want).

Why would eggplant induce labor?

It is rumored that eggplant can help induce labor due to its reputedly high content of a compound called prostaglandin. However, I can’t find any evidence that eggplants have prostaglandins (aka, human hormones).

Unless we’re talking about something often represented by an eggplant emoji ()…. if you know what I mean. Yes, semen has prostaglandins — and maybe something in eggplant helps those couples get romantic? Perhaps a little nipple stim (which can cause contractions, although doesn’t usually push you into labor on its own).

Most likely it is due to the spices in the marinara sauce. Or, perhaps the pleasure and oxytocin you release when you eat that delicious cheese pull mozzarella (or Romano or Ricotta, which can all be yummy)..

Or, perhaps it was because many women were eating the dish close to their due date. If lots of pregnant women close to their due date eat something, some of them will start having contractions within 48 hours. That is true.

It would also be true if they did NOT eat something. It’s just a factor of pregnancy ending at some point.

Can certain foods really induce labor?

While certain foods, such as eggplant, can potentially stimulate labor, it is important to remember that there is no scientific evidence that proves this theory.

Eating certain types of food may make a woman more comfortable due to a full stomach and the release of endorphins associated with eating something tasty. However, these methods don’t show any clinical evidence to start labor.

Some people include Mexican (or spicy) foods, pineapple, or raspberry leaf tea as foods that induce labor. But no studies suggest any of those work. All of them are old wives tales (and eggplant is probably an old Italian wives’ tale).

What WILL Induce Labor?

I actually have a few posts asking on if certain things will induce labor:

Jumping jacks

Prenatal massage

Warm baths

Getting a pedicure

Coughing

Is it safe to eat foods that induce labor?

In general yes. Although some of these foods upset your digestion, or cause heartburn.

This is not the same as labor. So, unless you want to have GI upset or heartburn, some of them you might want to avoid (especially looking at spicy foods towards the end of pregnancy when heartburn peaks).

The Health Benefits of Eggplant When Pregnant

Eggplant is a popular vegetable that is often used in cooking. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals, and can be a healthy addition to the diet for pregnant women.

Eggplant contains high levels of folate, which is important for the development of the baby’s neural tube. It also contains antioxidants that can help to protect the developing fetus from damage caused by free radicals. Eating eggplant during pregnancy can also help to prevent constipation and promote regularity.

Should you try inducing labor yourself with certain foods?

I mean, if you like the foods and you hope they’ll kick you into labor — at least you like the foods.

Please remember that you don’t want to do anything to kickstart labor before 36-37 weeks, and after talking with your provider.

Also, remember there is a reason that the hospitals use the induction methods that they do — they work. They work predictably, with all kinds of people. So, if you want to be induced, talk with your provider about safe ways to do that after 39 weeks (prior to 39 weeks they will only induce you with a medical reason).

I have a whole video discussing the ARRIVE trial in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples if you’re looking for more information on being induced after 39 weeks of pregnancy.

Should you try castor oil to induce labor?

I have personally seen the effects of castor oil for pregnant women. It tends to be a LOT of diarrhea that lasts for a LONG time. I talk about it in my post on Midwives Brew, but just know that castor oil can be problematic for both you and the baby as it can make all of you have diarrhea, which isn’t great. I also have a post on avoiding pooping during labor (and this is NOT one of the ways).

Dehydration can be a real issue during pregnancy, and baby can poop in the womb due to the distress, but talk with your provider if you have questions about it.

Again, if you’re willing to try drastic methods like castor oil, hopefully you and your provider can have a discussion on when you might be able to schedule an elective induction.

Not trying to induce labor but looking for an eggplant parm recipe?

I think this Eggplant Parmigiana recipe by Love & Lemons looks pretty good. I also really like that you don’t have to fry it. I would recommend that if you’re close to 40 weeks, you probably not stand in front of a fryer (I think my back would break). If you don’t want to make the marinara sauce, I LOVE Rao’s. Yum!

I have made it personally a few times. Just make sure to dry the eggplant slices on paper towels well after sprinkling with salt. It helps the breading adhere to the dish better. That’s my only advice.

That’s because I’m a nurse, not a chef. I do have LOTS of advice about not feeling anxious about the labor room. So, come join me in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples today!

And, if you’re not quite sure you’re ready for that whole thing (although if you’re close enough to try to induce yourself, you don’t have a lot of time), check out my free prenatal class.
For pregnant women, it is essential to pay extra attention to their fluid and electrolyte intake. During pregnancy, the amount of blood in a woman’s body increases by up to 50%. This increase in blood volume puts strain on the heart and can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause numerous problems, such as premature labor, low birth weight, and even fetal death. However, do pregnant women NEED electrolyte drinks? Let’s explore this topic further.

Before we get going, I was pretty shocked by how almost all the articles on this topic are written by electrolyte replacement drinks for pregnancy — please do be mindful about who you’re taking information from.

First off….

What are Electrolytes?

An electrolyte is a substance that produces an electrically conductive solution when dissolved in water. Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, and can lead to serious health problems. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium are all electrolytes, and they are essential for maintaining fluid balance in the body. When you become dehydrated, your body loses electrolytes and your fluid balance is disrupted. This can be dangerous for pregnant women and young children. Electrolyte drinks can help replenish lost electrolytes and restore fluid balance, as well as supporting the nervous system.

Do Pregnant Women Need Electrolyte Replacement?

In general, no.

Healthy people — in general, do not need electrolyte drinks. If you’re eating (and absorbing) a varied diet that give you the vitamins and minerals you need will also be giving you the electrolytes you need. However, there are a few instances in which electrolyte monitoring is important:

If you have severe nausea/vomiting and aren’t keeping fluids down. At that point, this may be an issue.

If you’re doing extremely strenuous exercise that sweats a LOT (why they’re often called SPORTS drinks)

Please don’t get caught-up into the idea that you NEED electrolyte replacement because you are pregnant. If you’re experiencing a healthy pregnancy, water is your best plan to hydrate with.

Positives of Electrolyte Drinks During Pregnancy

The main positive attribute of these beverages is that they may make you drink more (often due to making “plain water” taste better).

Dehydration, unlike electrolytes, is a serious issue during pregnancy.

Issues with Dehydration During Pregnancy

Dehydration can happen more easily because the pregnant woman’s body is already working hard to support the growing baby and her own body’s needs.

Problems that dehydration can cause:

Preterm Labor

“false” labor (contractions that aren’t going anywhere)

Uterine irritability (your uterus is just “irritable” — no real contractions, but feels crampy)

Just feeling extra crappy — much more than you would in regular life.

Also, if you get sick (even just a light cold or flu), you need to drink a TON of water to help your body and baby feel alright through the illiness.

I have personal experience with this as I was SUPER dehydrated with a flu on my 2nd baby. I ended up getting 2 liters of fluid IV and felt like a whole new person when I left the hospital. It was AMAZING how much better I felt.

And, that was due to the fluids, not electrolytes.

Negatives of Electrolyte Drinks in Pregnancy

The main one is that most of these sports drinks with electrolytes (like Gatorade or Powerade) tend to have a LOT of extra sugar and salt in them. Much more than you need. Other people are concerned artificial colorings or flavorings in the drinks as well.

If you have gestational diabetes, and possibly even high blood pressure and drink electrolyte drinks frequently it can be problematic. In fact, sometimes these two diseases can go un-noticed for a while, so in drinking these things in excess can cause extra issues with those once they are found.

Also, the cost can be hard on families. In looking at some of these electrolyte drinks I’m surprised by how expensive they are. In general, tap water is fine as long as your municipal water system is safe.

There is a trend in some places to drink distilled water, and that can be problematic as it would rid the water of minerals and possibly electrolytes. So, be mindful that whatever water source you’re using — make sure that it doesn’t take out the minerals out of it.

What types of issues can electrolyte imbalances cause?

Most often the one you see first is muscle cramps. This is because your muscles use sodium and potassium to make your muscles work. If you don’t have enough of those in your body you can get muscle cramps as your muscles “reset”.

Do You Need electrolytes if you’re getting pregnancy muscle cramps?

The dreaded Charlie horses in the middle of the night can be disturbing, and you’ll want to find a way to fix those.

However, these cramps are due to a variety of reasons:

Swelling

Increased blood flow for your whole body during pregnancy (so you’re body’s trying to figure out how to stabilize the electrolytes across your body with all this extra fluid)

Increased weight

Lack of exercise

The best ways to help these muscle cramps:

Stay hydrated — drink lots of water (helps your body flush what it needs to the right places)

Stretching

Eat a well-balanced diet to make sure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals you need

Take a prenatal vitamin (as this should have a good amount of potassium and sodium in it already)

They also recommend pregnant women talk with their provider before taking other supplements so that you’re not getting too much.

Many providers also recommend eating foods rich in potassium and calcium as well as they find that helps.

Can too many electrolytes be bad?

Not really. We take in a TON of electrolytes in our diet, and our kidneys filter out how much we need and send the rest out with our urine.

The main issue with the drinks is the increased sugar in them, and also that they have too much salt, which an be an issue if your blood pressure is sodium-sensitive.

Electrolytes while pregnant won’t hurt you — they just might not help. The added costs, and sugar can be problematic (especially if drank frequently).

Electrolyte drinks for pregnancy:

Heads up! There may be affiliate links in here – I might earn a smidge with your click. No cost to you, just good vibes! Check my boring stuff for deets.

There are a few on the market targeted specifically for pregnancy. Most of them come as electrolyte powders:

While Drip Drop isn’t targeted specifically for pregnancy, they definitely have a lot of information on how important electrolytes are during pregnancy on their website.

Might I also add that the fastest way to get hydrated is to drink two giant glasses of water. Not to reach for a “rehydration packet” — but I digress.

This one includes prenatal vitamins in your water — which would be good if you can’t keep down the pills.

And finally, Pink Stork is a popular one.

Again, if you’re looking for ways to make water more palatable this is a decent option to have once a day as they often flavor the water. But, absolutely not necessary unless your provider recommends it (or you’re unable to keep fluids down).

Best Electrolytes for Pregnancy

Honestly, whatever one you take in recommendation with your provider. Remember many electrolyte drinks have:

More sodium than you need (which can be problematic for your blood pressure in some patients)

More sugar than you need (again, not great to have added sugar — but it can make water more palatable — and I get that)

Artificial colors or flavors that may be bad for you

So, talk with your provider before you start trying some!

How to stay hydrated with severe morning sickness:

Morning sickness can make it difficult to stay hydrated, but it’s important to drink plenty of fluids and replenish electrolytes lost through vomiting. Try sipping on clear or ice-cold fluids like water, clear broths, frozen water or ice pops, or sports drinks. Avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, and soda, which can make dehydration worse.

If you aren’t keeping fluids down at all you need to contact your provider, because dehydration, electrolytes and generalized nutrition are definitely an issue at that point.

Your provider should take this seriously. This isn’t to say that this a problem that can be solved for every pregnant woman, but they should be trying medications, IV therapy and possibly other things to try to manage this.

How much Fluid Intake Should You Have During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a time when it’s especially important to stay hydrated. How much fluid intake you need depends on a few factors, but generally, you should drink at least eight LARGE glasses of water per day. If you’re feeling thirsty, drink more.

Other fluids like fruit juice, milk, and herbal tea can count towards your daily total. However, most providers recommend getting more than half of your fluids from straight water. You can always add some fruit into an infusion water bottle, but most other drinks add calories and sometimes extra sugars you don’t need (looking at you juice). I also have a whole post about if you can drink wine during pregnancy.

Drink more if you’re exercising or it’s hot outside. dehydration can lead to preterm labor, so make sure you’re getting enough fluids.

A lot of people say to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water. So, if you’re 200 pounds, you’d drink 100 ounces of water/day. That’s a hard one for a lot of people to do. This may also be increased in your third trimester as you’re carrying more weight (and may sweat more).

A good measure of water intake that’s easy to tell is to check the color of your urine. It should have just a very small amount of yellow in it. If you find that your urine is a dark yellow, or heading towards an amber color you need to hydrate ASAP. You should do this throughout your pregnancy to make sure you’re getting enough water.

The good news with pregnancy is that you’re going to pee a lot, so you can check your hydration status frequently too!

I have whole post on what makes your water break that you might find interesting.

Can Pregnant Women Drink Gatorade?

Yes, most pregnant women can drink Gatorade.

It is important for pregnant women to hydrate, and Gatorade is a sports drink that can help them do that, and is most often safe to drink.

However, pregnant women should only drink Gatorade in moderation. And some women — like those with high blood pressure or diabetes — should NOT drink Gatorade. Those who are experiencing a lot of nausea/vomiting may find that these types of electrolyte drinks can help them keep their electrolytes in a safe area.

Gatorade should, in general, not be your main fluid source during pregnancy but having it now and then may make hydrating a bit easier. Be sure to talk with your provider if you have any questions.

What about postpartum & breastfeeding?

It’s similar then too — ask your provider if they think you need them. If you use them as a treat to get you to drink more, that might be worthwhile.

Water intake when you breastfeed is important to be able to produce the milk you need.

What should pregnant women drink during pregnancy?

Water should be their main source of hydration.

However, other types of fluids like, teas, lemonades, Gatorade, coconut water, or Ginger Ale may supplement the water. Many women “reward” themselves for having straight water a few times by having a glass of something more exciting.

What should pregnant women NOT drink during pregnancy?

It is recommended that pregnant women limit their caffeine intake limit their caffeine consumption to less than 200 mg (about two, six-ounce cups) per day. Check with your favorite energy drinks or soda’s caffeine content before indulging in it as well. You can learn more about caffeine in pregnancy here. Remember that caffeine can actually increase dehydration due to it’s effects on the body. So, not a great source of hydration.

It is also recommended that there is NO safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, as it can affect your fetus. Please talk with your doctor about non-alcoholic beers & wines before drinking those as well. Here is more info about alcohol and pregnancy.

Let me repeat that alcohol is not safe during pregnancy, and can also increase dehydration (as well as the issues with your developing baby).

So, that’s it on electrolyte drinks during pregnancy.

What IS safe to do, is to take a prenatal class. Come join me in The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. For just a few hours of your time, you can feel SO much more prepared for your hospital birth!

Is it safe to eat beef jerky or other jerky types during pregnancy? Its flavorful, high protein bite might be just what you’re craving during pregnancy, but there might be a couple of reasons why you shouldn’t ingest it.

Why would I know anything about beef jerky during pregnancy?

Hi, I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse . I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind Pulling Curls and The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. I have also been pregnant 3 times and know the trials of really WANTING something, but not knowing if it’s safe for your baby.

Obviously, this isn’t medical advice and it is a good idea to discuss your diet during pregnancy with your healthcare provider. Things that could change what you should eat could be: Gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, sodium sensitivity, stomach sensitivity and more….

Oh, and grab my healthy eating during pregnancy guide — it’s totally free and I’ll send it right to your inbox:

Introduction: What is Beef Jerky?

Jerky is a type of dried, preserved meat that has been seasoned and smoked. It can be made from beef, elk, venison, buffalo, lamb and other meats.

The word “jerky” comes from the Quechuan language word “charqui”. It can be made from beef, elk, venison, buffalo, lamb and other meats. Jerky is usually made by drying unprocessed meat (at low temperatures) with salt over a period of days to weeks.

So, basically it goes through a dehydration process with various salts and herbs on it.

It is a salty snack with protein, which sounds appealing during pregnancy (especially for salty pregnancy cravings).

As you can tell, nowhere in this process was the meat cooked, so it is still technically raw meat. Which is one of the things that could become a problem for pregnant women.

Bonus Tip: The same information goes for Slim Jims as well (like beef jerky, they are also uncooked), and other jerky products.

I know, it can seem really overwhelming to figure-out what’s ok. I even have a post on if you can eat sour cream when pregnant!

What are the Benefits of Eating Beef Jerky During Pregnancy

Since there is no scientific evidence that backs up the claim that pregnant women should avoid eating beef jerky, it’s safe to say that there are no proven benefits. Although it can be a good source of protein and is easy to travel with since it doesn’t require refrigeration.

A lot of women might think it’s a great snack due to it’s great protein content and how it might hit their salty cravings. BUT, it probably isn’t your best option.

What are the Risks of Eating Beef Jerky During Pregnancy

The use of beef jerky is prevalent in many cultures. It is cheap and can be easily prepared by heating it.

However, there can be risks associated with the consumption of beef jerky. For me, these boil into two groups:

#1 It is Technically Uncooked Meat

Pregnant women are only advised to eat cooked meat. There is a chance a pregnant woman could get food poisoning from uncooked or undercooked meat (as there is for any of us, although a pregnant woman’s immune system isn’t as great). This is the same harmful bacteria that can be in deli meats, lunch meat or soft cheeses as well. It is called Listeria — and I talk a lot about it in that article.

However, complications from that type of digestive issue could leave her ill or dehydrated. Some literature shows it could pass to the baby. While that is quite rare, if it does pass to the baby it can cause birth defects in your unborn baby. In the first trimester it can cause a miscarriage.

Jerky may give you a parasite like toxoplasma gondii from uncooked meats (which will give you toxoplasmosis). There are likely other foodborne illnesses you could get from it as well.

If you’re wondering how much you need to cook meat — you can check the temp with a food thermometer — and the safe temperatures are here.

Is homemade jerky safer?

Unless you cook it, no. It is still dehydrated, and not cooked meat.

#2 Most Jerky Contains Nitrites

Nitrites seem to possibly be carcinogenic, when ingested at high doses.

Again, no real studies as to what they could do to your fetus, but it is probably best to try to avoid them (although some jerky is listed as Nitrite-free).

Here’s an article on why they recommend against nitrites during pregnancy (although, frankly, there are no real studies on this).

Some people also believe it has too much salt. High salt content foods aren’t great for some people. If you have high blood pressure during pregnancy you may be extra sodium sensitive.

So, is beef jerky safe to eat while pregnant?

Ultimately, it’s up to you. If you are craving beef jerky like crazy, here are a few other things you can try:

Well cooked meat with salt to taste (some people believe you need to watch your sodium consumption during your pregnancy, so that is something to discuss with your provider).

Drink more water. Often cravings are caused by dehydration in general and water will appease them.

Think of something else that sounds yummy and eat that. Distraction can help!

And yes, there are other things you should be avoiding during pregnancy. Cold Cuts, raw shelfish, fish with mercury (like Swordfish) and more — so be sure to talk with your provider about if things like raw cookie dough are OK for you.

I know it just doesn’t seem fair that everything in your life is curtailed as you grow this baby inside of you. But, you will likely have many more years to eat what you choose than you will have being pregnant.

Is it OK to drink ensure while pregnant? Is it safe to drink during pregnancy? Pregnant women may be looking into an ensure product (or something like it) to fulfill their nutritional needs during the pregnancy. Let’s talk about why you might want a shake like that or why it might be better not to take it?

But first, how do I know all of this? Hi — I’m Hilary — The Pregnancy Nurse .
What is Ensure?

Heads up! There may be affiliate links in here – I might earn a smidge with your click.
They are a nutritional drinks designed to help adults meet their nutritional needs.

“Ensure” is the name we give to a variety of this nutritional shakes in this genre of “food” — other names include Boost, Carnation Instant breakfast and other names that are looking to help you meet your nutritional needs.

There are also several types of Ensure — including Ensure original, Ensure Max and Ensure plus. Ensure has long been known as the main brand in this area. Make sure you’re picking the right item for your nutritional supplement.

I would call these items separate from a protein drink, as they contain a very balanced portfolio of nutrients, including carbohydrates, fats and proteins along with vitamins and minerals. Most people call this a “nutrition shake” instead.

Those vitamins and minerals in Ensure can be very important. However, you should also be sure to take a quality prenatal vitamin as well. If you have a hard time with the tablets, you can always try the gummies. Just be sure that it fits the needs you have (discuss that one with your provider).

When I worked in the nursing home, we gave them out a LOT. Ensure drinkers are mainly the elderly.

Is Ensure Safe to Drink During Pregnancy?

Ensure doesn’t include anything that would be toxic to you and your pregnancy. However, it does have a large amount of calories, which you may or may not need. There isn’t anything particularly bad about Ensure for you in your pregnancy.

What Are the Benefits of Drinking Ensure?

Ensure is a drink that is full of vitamins and minerals. It is often given to pregnant women to help get their nutrients in with morning sickness. It is also used frequently in the elderly to get in their nutritional needs.

However, anyone can drink it. It is a great way to get your daily vitamins, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. A serving of ensure has as much calcium as an 8 oz glass of milk. It is also a good source of fiber. You can drink it on an empty stomach or mix it with a shake.

Ensure has many of the prenatal vitamins that you will want to have during your pregnancy. So, that’s a win.

Most often Ensure drinks are provided ready-to-drink — which makes it easy to use — and take with you to work or whatever.

Mostly, it would be good for people who aren’t able to meet their nutritional needs through a regular diet. So, if you were losing weight or something like that — you’d want to consider something like Ensure.

Are there Con’s to Drinking Ensure During Pregnancy?

The main con would be increased weight gain from the nutrients in it. If you are able to eat a variety of foods, it is a better option than drinking ensure, for the most part.

The other con would be the taste. A lot of people do not like the taste. That’s one of the main problems for women who have morning sickness. They just can’t stomach the taste. Which doesn’t help a lot if they throw it up afterwards.

How many extra calories do pregnant women need?

Most pregnant women need about 1800 calories in their first trimester, 2200 in their second, and 2400’ish in the third trimester. So, in reality it’s not a whole lot more calories, but if you need more calories in your pregnancy diet, and you’re having a hard time maintaining a healthy weight, Ensure could help you have complete and balanced nutrition.

Can Ensure Help with Morning Sickness?

So, morning sickness is hard, because sometimes you start getting sick because you’re so dehydrated. SO, if you can get down some ensure (or frankly, any fluids) it’s a win — because you may feel a bit better after having SOME fluids. Morning sickness and nausea are tough. If you suffer with them, I am so sorry. Hopefully it doesn’t last too long.

And yes, any nutrients you can get in you if you’re throwing most things up is a win. It would definitely be a good fit for a mom who’s having trouble keeping down a regular diet. Or if you just have cravings for low-protein foods, you could use Ensure to fill the gaps for things that make you feel sick.

Things to Remember Before Drinking Ensure While Pregnant

The main thing to remember is that a varied diet is better than drinking ensure, as long as you can get the calories you need through those regular foods.

Also, you shouldn’t be drinking ensure in addition to your full diet, unless you are losing weight — or underweight. You’d want to do that under medical supervision. Ensure has a good number of calories as well as 9 grams of protein (sometimes more). You want to make sure you’re not gaining excess weight.

But, if you’re in a spot where you’re not getting enough calories, ensure can be a good addition (if you can stomach it), and is safe to drink while pregnant. This would be extra true for people pregnant with multiple babies (twins, triplets, etc).

Can I drink Ensure while breastfeeding?

Similar to pregnancy, it would be important to only use ensure shakes as a supplement to your nutritional needs while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you aren’t able to get all your nutritional needs through your diet while breastfeeding, you could consider using Ensure to fill nutritional gaps.

Pregnant and lactating women do have an increased nutritional need.

Final Verdict: Is it safe to drink Ensure during pregnancy?

Ensure is safe to consume during pregnancy. The main issue would be if you need to gain weight, or if you’re already eating a good diet throughout your pregnancy. However, ensure can help you get the calories you need during — like a nutritional boost when you need it. Ensure might help you achieve balanced nutrition, and could be a good way to supplement your diet. However, Ensure should not be your sole source of nutrition and is not meant as meal replacement.
