I think everyone knows they need to get prepared for birth. But, there are a lot of REALLY bad ways people are choosing to do so. Today I want to talk about the 3 worst ways that I see people preparing, how you can pivot those to positive things so you can really feel confident going into your delivery.

The best way to prepare for birth isn’t more random tips — it’s a clear, step-by-step understanding of what to expect, what your options are, and how to navigate it all as a team. That’s where real confidence comes from.

Social Media

We do it, we ALL do it — I was just on social media looking at my son’s chances of getting a job he’d had a final interview for. Why? I have no idea — I’m just saying we all look to social media bout what to expect from life.

But, just like videos on social media have nothing to do with my own son’s chances of getting a job — it also can have some issues in preparing for birth.

But why?

You Don’t Get the Full Story

The videos that do the best on social media are often short (at least under 90 seconds — but often closer to 30 seconds) and include a hook that draws you in that often peaks your interest on a topic you’re interested in (but doesn’t fulfill on that promise).

Ultimately, you often get a small nibble of information which leaves you with more questions. Then, you head into the comment section to learn more only to find so many more questions and often a LOT of people with a LOT of opinions (not facts).

This can leave you feeling overwhelmed and like you can NEVER learn what’s important for your upcoming birth.

Social media can be:

An OK way to supplement your already prepared and confident brain (I recommend this)

A great way to share how you’re feeling and not feel so alone

A nice way to find people you trust to help you learn MORE — you may have even found me there (find me @pregnancynurse on all the platforms).

But it really, really can’t be your main way to get prepared.

At the very least try to get videos on Youtube vs the short reels. You’ll at least get more of the full picture on a topic. You can find my channel (with a TON of videos) here. But I want more than even that for you!

Clips give you pieces. Preparation comes from seeing the whole picture.

It Can’t be Trusted.

When I first started really working as a content creator in 2014 (I’m old, I know) I learned that “if you are willing to write on a topic, that means you’re an expert”.

And I was like…. what?

Sure, that might be true on things like what diapers are best, or what hair product works best in curly hair… but when it’s something as important as your baby…? Or, possibly even your life?

Here we are in 2026 and this is honestly just a standard. There are so many people out there saying acting as experts who’ve….

Doula’d in a few births

Maybe just had a few kids of their own (or honestly, just one)

And these might be fine people to have a chat with at your local mom’s group, but when you’re looking for actual foundational advice for your pregnancy, labor & birth and managing postpartum — they’re not who you give that trust to.

My best tips:

Look for experience — as a labor nurse you really don’t become competent until about 8 years into your practice — so, you should be looking for real experience in the labor room (not a physical therapist, or an RN who has not worked L&D).

Combine that with initials — I’m an RN-BSN which means I am licensed and I have a bachelor’s degree. I have met minimum requirements a few times, which means I meet a standard.

No Outliers — their advice should be fairly standard, and should empower you to make choices for yourself. Not pushing you into one specific way to birth.

Social media often shares opinions — not context. Learning from an expert helps you understand the “why” behind what’s happening, so you can make informed decisions that feel right for you.

Focus Just on Planned Stuff

This one catches a lot of people off-guard because the planned stuff is actually the foundation for a lot of classes. Things like:

Stages of labor

How baby progresses down the birth canal

How to manage the planned pain of labor.

These are things that happen in almost all births.

We know they’ll happen — so it is smart to prepare for them. But they should only be a small section of your class!

There was a recent study that showed that out of 65 birth classes they looked at — NONE covered the unplanned events. And I’m not talking about crazy rare things — I’m talking cesareans, inductions, episiotomies. I outline that in this article.

Now, clearly a sample size of 65 isn’t big — but it’s something. AND they clearly didn’t look at the class I recommend as it has a chapter on caesareans and inductions.

The reality is that a lot of pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum is unplanned. You need a class that is going to talk about the unplanned things that might happen. And yes — I did say postpartum. Just as important to know what to do if that’s going wrong too!

It’s not the unexpected that makes labor feel overwhelming — it’s not being prepared for it. When you understand what situations like induction or cesarean actually look like, you can approach them with less anxiety and more confidence instead of trying to process everything in the moment.

Want to know more about those unplanned events? — check out these posts:

3 Tips to Using Movement During Labor WITH an Epidural

Alone

This final one is easy to do.

Schedules are crazy, partners may not be super jazzed to learn about this — or think learning about this is up to you.

But I’m here to say that you can be as prepared as you can be — but if 5 nurses run in your room (see unplanned events above) and that partner starts to freak out, that freak out will start to pass-on to you too.

And I don’t want that for you. I want BOTH of you to feel cool, calm, collected.

Of course, this dives right into the fac that most people are “preparing” on social media and may send a few important topics to their partner, but the partner is left with those bits and pieces, and questions that overwhelm them.

That’s why a class, you can take together, and get all the important stuff is so important. I recommend this one (it’s specifically there to do with a partner — even if it’s your mom or a friend). It only takes a few hours, and if time together is at an absolute premium in the bundle there are key point videos where it’s like getting the cliff notes of labor!

One of the biggest shifts couples notice isn’t just what they learn — it’s how much more connected and prepared they feel together. When you’ve talked through what to expect, your options, and how to support each other, you’re not trying to figure things out in labor — you’re working as a team.

I just wanted to say how glad I am that you’re here. That you’re even thinking about getting prepared.

I know you’re going to pick the right path for you, and have a wonderful journey into parenthood.

What other crappy ways have you seen people prepare — tell me in the comments!

Are you worried about making all the choices that will confront you during labor? Honestly, I can’t blame you. The hospital is a foreign place with lots of choices that will come-up during your stay. While many patients just take whatever their doctor says and use that, I’m hopeful that you want to be more in control of your future — and that’s where these tips will be helpful.

Before we start, I want to explain something really important:

Data gives us wide swaths of information across a full population (at least good ones do).

However, you really need experts to apply it to YOUR situation with a lot of experience — and that’s where your doctor comes in. Like I always say in my disclosure:

This (or any article on The Pregnancy Nurse) should be taken as medical advice, this purely educational. Please talk with your provider about your specific needs and circumstances.

The hope is to take the data, apply your current and past medical situations and make a plan together moving forward. But, how do you do that? I’ve got tips!

A Foundation of Information

Ok, the first thing you need to know is just a foundation of how birth happens, what to expect in the hospital and how to get the most out of your stay.

Now, I know you’re thinking — where do I get that, because my birth class just covered pain management?

And that’s awesome — but a good birth class covers so much more…

And, as a note I think a good birth class should also engage your partner and getting them prepared as well — which is why I recommend this one.

When you’re tallying if a class is helpful, you want to watch for:

Understanding 3rd trimester testing (because FAR too many births are going off the rails at this point)

How to labor at home in early labor (safely)

What to expect from admission at the hospital (this part already leaves far too many families freaked out)

Common interventions & supplies (these can be really scary if you don’t know how routine they are in L&D)

Pain management options including natural pain management techniques (you deserve to know your options in advance)

What to expect at an induction (even if you’re not planning on one, you just never know)

What happens at a cesarean birth (again, even if you’re not planning on one)

What happens at delivery

How to manage your postpartum stay (and get the most out of it)

What to expect when you get home, how to stay safe and even thrive as a new parent!

Now, you’re thinking — “This is a full college class, Hilary” — and I’m here to tell you that you’re really getting surface information. You don’t need to know the chemical make-up of oxytocin, but you do want to know how it affects your birth and how to promote it.

I think a good birth class can be done in just a few hours.

I think it’s also smart to make sure you “vibe” with the teacher. The class I recommend actually has a secret free chapter right here that gets you understanding 3rd trimester testing.

Do a vibe check. Like what you see — jump in and get it done!

Want to know more about birth education — check out these posts:

Do Birth Classes Improve Birth Outcomes? What do the studies show?

Do You Need a Birth Class if You Plan to Get an Epidural

Alternatives to Hospital Birth Classes

How Much Do Birth Classes Cost?

Are Childbirth Classes Covered by Health Insurance?

Remember What Your Job Is

Ok, here is where I remind you that your job is to give that baby a safe, happy place to grow and thrive in your womb.

It’s not your job to understand fetal monitoring.

It’s not your job to read all the studies about everything you’ll confront at birth.

That’s why you’re hiring an expert.

For instance, I know nothing about tree trimming, but we have a few really close to our house and we get wild winds here in Phoenix. So — I hire an expert to trim it right and keep our home safe. I just know to call him before monsoon season hits.

You really need to look at your doctor as nothing different. They’re just an expert in the room that does know all those things and you call them in when you need help.

They are not, under almost ALL circumstances, making choices for you.

Somehow doctors decided that since they sometimes (and I mean RARELY) make life-saving choices in situations they get to make all the choices. Honestly, I think most of those doctors are retiring, but they are still out there.

Sometimes you’ll hear them say dumb things like :

We’ll schedule your induction at 37 weeks (vs — let’s consider an induction at 37 weeks)

We’ll section at 8 if I don’t see progress (vs, I’m concerned about how baby’s descending, let’s review it at 8)

We’re going to break your water (vs, what do you think about me breaking your water?)

Honestly, not sure who the “royal we” is in this situation, but I’m not a fan. And you don’t have to be a fan either (and feel free to correct them — nicely, that’s honestly the only way they will learn).

So, to boil this section down:

It’s your job to get a foundation of knowledge (like we talked about above)

It’s your job to ultimately make the choices

Oh, I also think it’s smart to think about what you’d like in a perfect world with a lot of these things — building a birth plan can do that. I can also help with that right here:

This doesn’t mean things go according to that “plan”…. and you’ll still have to make choices the day of. So let’s keep talking!

Informed Consent Isn’t EVERYTHING

Before “big” choices your provider should provide informed consent.

And honestly, even before smaller ones, they should at least provide some balanced info that should include:

Risks — things that could go wrong with their recommendation (they often forget this part)

Benefits — why they are recommending it

Alternatives — what else could we do (often, this is to wait)

The thing is, this should be very medically-minded. For an induction it might look like:

I think we should perhaps induce you. The baby seems to not have enough fluid around her and that can be a problem as they stay in the womb including possibly stillbirth from the cord getting squished. You’ve said that fetal movement seems less lately and that has me concerned. However, there is a risk to an induction of labor including increased pain, longer being in the hospital and possibly postpartum hemorrhage. We could also wait if you would prefer. I could order an ultrasound in a couple of days to check again. Either way, I want to be sure that you’re doing your kick counts.

Now, that is a very simple statement. But what’s important to you?

They said you might be in the hospital longer, but some people think that means a few extra hours, when it really could be a few extra days.

Keeping in mind that while your provider has a guess they don’t really know how long your induction will take (please let me know if you find a good crystal ball out there).

So — how do you find out what’s important to you? You ask questions.

If my provider gave me that informed consent, I’d ask:

I was hoping to avoid an epidural — do you think this increases the chance I’ll need one?

I hate being in the hospital, how long would you guess I’ll be there? What should I prepare for?

How low is that fluid number, how concerned are you about that? How often do they measure wrong, could we get an NST to see how baby is looking?

As you can see in those questions I asked, I use my foundation of info to know about 3rd trimester testing, I knew that I preferred not to have an epidural in my perfect birth “birth plan”, and I also knew enough about inductions to know that sometimes they’re pretty long — I’d done my part to get to this point.

I think far too many people get that informed consent and then feel like it’s a multiple choice test where they then have to choose option A or option B.

When in reality this an essay test, and you should now ask questions to get more information.

You also don’t have to make a choice right then.

You could ask the doctor to see their next patient while you discuss it with those you love (even making a phone call is fine), or even go home to make the choice in a few hours as you sit on it (again — making sure your provider doesn’t see any big issues with a few hours wait – this low fluid scenario could be mild, or really problematic).

So, keep asking questions until you get clear on:

What your risks are

What is going to happen moving forward

Any complications you need to keep an eye on

Bytheway, far too many people go in for an induction and just don’t ask the questions to get the full picture of what the plan is. I made an induction checklist to do just that:

Changing Minds & Hearts

Here’s the one. The one my husband hates.

You can always change your mind.

Ok, not always. Once they start a cesarean you can’t really walk that back, and once they break your water it’s broken — but in MOST cases you can say, this isn’t working for me I want to stop.

That may mean taking a breather to talk about things a bit more.

It may mean going home.

BTW, going home is one of my favorite keys that people just don’t talk about enough.

But you can change your mind.

Once again — I think far too many patients get stuck on “I made this choice” and forget that they can change their mind once they really see what they’re facing. Often providers don’t bring it up — but it is an option.

Now, is it always a safe option? I don’t know. That’s up to you to decide with your expert team. The good news is once you’re admitted to the hospital you also have a labor nurse you can include in this conversation.

As a note, it is NOT your nurse’s job to give you informed consent, that is you doctor or midwife’s job. BUT they can educate you, talk over options and help you navigate the “system” — be sure to use them!

Ok, it’s honestly a lot more simple then this article made it seem:

Get that foundation on information. I recommend this.

Remember, your job isn’t to be the expert, but it is to make the choices (with their expert advice)

Once you get informed consent, be sure to ask questions about what’s important to you (because it’s different for everyone)

Remember you can most often change your mind — very few choices are final.

That last one always gives me a lot of comfort as a human.

Honestly, I think you’re going to do so great because you’re getting prepared already. I’m so glad you’re here. Please subscribe so we can continue to hang out for the rest of your pregnancy!

If you think that birth class is mainly to get you through the pain of labor — do you really need it even if you’re planning on an epidural? Great question — today I’m going to explore exactly what a birth class can, and can’t do — and what your next steps should be.

While we’re here — you clearly have some birth plans, but have you written them down? Grab my Birth Plans Made Easy series right here (it’s free):

Important Things To Know About Birth Classes

If you’re thinking about this question — I need to reveal two truths about birth classes

Before I share them, let me remind you I’ve been at thousands of births in my 20 years of bedside L&D nursing — so I really know what you need to know!

Every birth class should include some natural pain management. I think it’s important — and we will talk about why.

A birth class should cover much more than just natural pain management. If it only covers that — you aren’t prepared for birth.

Ok, let’s talk about why these things are true?

Why does everyone need some natural pain management techniques?

Yes, even those planning on an epidural, or even those who are planning for a cesarean — I think all of us need some natural pain management coping skills.

Why? I’m glad you asked….

100% of births (and/or pregnancy) have some pain associated with it.

That could be:

Before you get an epidural (especially laboring at home for a bit before the hospital)

Ligament pain during pregnancy (I can vouch for those sometimes being worse than contractions)

Pain during the cesarean

After-birth pains of your uterus cramping back down

Managing the pain of healing your body after pregnancy & birth

Natural pain management helps you to not tense-up around that pain.

I think most of us tense-up naturally around pain, but often tensing-up around pain makes it worse. When you learn to breathe through it, relax, maybe not panic — it makes it better.

While I wish there was a pill that could take away all the pains during this period of our lives, there is not.

And I also have to give a plug for nonpharmalogical pain management when it works. The more narcotics you take, the more like you are to get addicted, you can’t drive, and it adds to your already sleepy state.

That isn’t to say that pain pills are bad, but when they can be avoided I think it’s a win.

SO, with this — no matter how you’re planning on having your birth (or how you end-up giving birth) having some pain management techniques is smart.

Want to know more about birth — check out these posts:

Alternatives to Hospital Birth Classes

Birth Often Doesn’t Go to Plan

So, you’re planning on an epidural, but labor goes fast and suddenly — you don’t have time to get one.

Let’s say your baby has been breech for months but suddenly you go into labor, you go into L&D and they’ve switched to head down. You’re having a vaginal delivery and it hurts.

I really think it’s important to prepare for all types of birth, because you really just don’t know what type you will end-up having. That includes:

Cesarean (for real — I think everyone should have a basic understanding of it and what to expect)

Inductions

Non-medicated birth

Epidurals

And yes, I do recommend a birth class that includes all of that (this one) — we’ll talk more about it in a bit — keep reading!

What Else Should a Birth Class Include?

I think most people envision a birth class that just includes you on the floor with your partner breathing… but that isn’t what the majority of a birth class should include.

In fact, like physical therapy — a birth class should teach you how to manage it, and encourage you guys to practice it on your own — not include hours of practicing it with you.

In fact, in a recent study they showed that most birth classes only included “planned” things — like the stages of labor and natural pain management — but did not included those unplanned things — and that did NOT do the couple any favors!

In addition to what we talked about above, your birth class should also cover:

Common 3rd trimester testing, and what it can mean for your pregnancy moving forward (and making choices based on the results)

How to labor at home for a while

Common interventions in the hospital like 3 nurses running in and turning you

How to know something is going wrong in your recovery and where to seek help

Most birth classes just don’t cover these things — honestly because they sometimes make you a more “difficult” patient to deal with at the hospital (not just going along with the doctor’s orders).

But also the people who teach people how to teach about birth don’t cover these things, and those people don’t tend to know much about them because it takes an expert to know about them. Frankly, someone like a nurse.

So, yes — I do recommend The Online Prenatal Class for Couples.

It does have a natural pain management bonus video that will give you lots of ideas and tricks to try for that.

It also goes over what to expect in labor, the stages of labor and the “natural progression” of labor (and how it may feel quite unnatural).

But it also goes over all those things we’re not thinking about — like I mentioned in here.

The reason it can do that is because it’s taught by a very capable labor and delivery nurse who really cuts down on fluff, and really just shares what you need to know.

The reality is that most people who are traumatized by their birth have it happen because they weren’t prepared to make choices in labor. They end-up feeling “bullied” by the labor staff when they could have easily learned to speak up for themselves.

Learning about birth isn’t hard, but it can’t be done just through random articles (although I’m glad you’re here), or watching a few social media posts — it needs to be purposeful. That’s why I recommend this class.

Can I also give a shout-out for a class that doesn’t think there is a right way to birth. You want one that is evidence-based, prepares you for whatever kind of birth you have, without the extra birth of guilt. No one needs that. This one definitely fits that bill.

Ok, so have you taken a class yet? Do you feel more prepared for all of this? Tell us in the comments!

Are you a mom-to-be? Congratulations! Are you starting to feel a little bit anxious about childbirth and having a new baby? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Every pregnant woman experiences a range of emotions leading up to labor and delivery, but with the right preparation you can feel confident and well-equipped for the big day. In this post, we’ll discuss some tips on how to prepare for childbirth. Keep reading to learn more!

Childbirth can be a scary prospect, especially if you don’t know what to expect. You may feel like you’re on your own during this process.

Ok, let’s get on the road to prepared birth!

How to Prepare for Childbirth

Educate yourself on the different types of childbirth and what to expect

One of the best ways to prepare for labor is to educate yourself on all the different types of deliveries. This includes learning about vaginal births, cesarean sections, and induced labors (yes, it’s a good idea to have a grasp of ALL types of labors — check out my post on the different types of birth). It’s important to know what to expect during each type of delivery, as well as the risks and benefits associated with each one. Talk to your doctor about your options and what they recommend for you and your baby.

Even if you’re planning on a “regular” vaginal birth, there may be medical conditions arise that require other options. Remember, in the United States about 1/3 of pregnant women have a cesarean section, and most of those families feel very unprepared when they go unplanned into the operating room.

Many women come in with unrealistic expectations of natural birth, so be sure to figure out ALL your options as your due date approaches. Even if you’re planning on a birthing center birth, it’s good to get educated on what you might expect at a hospital birth in case you end up there (which isn’t unusual, especially if it’s your first baby).

I just read a study that said that most birth classes don’t really cover things like this — which is why I recommend this class.

Talk to your doctor or midwife about any concerns or questions you have

One of the best ways for pregnant women to prepare for childbirth is to communicate with their doctor. This includes discussing your concerns and questions, as well as getting their advice on what you can do to make your delivery as smooth as possible. It’s also important to update your doctor on any changes in your health or pregnancy, such as if you’re experiencing any complications.

You may think — oh, I’ll start doing that later, when things are more complicated, but I think that sometimes just having a birth plan helps to open these conversations up early. It gets you used to asking questions and creating that relationship with your provider.

Which brings me to….

Make a birth plan and share it with your doctor

One of the best ways to prepare for childbirth is to make a birth plan. This document will outline your preferences for labor and delivery, such as what type of delivery you would like to have and what pain relief options you would like to try. It’s important to share your birth plan with your doctor or healthcare provider so they can be sure to accommodate your wishes.

Also, if you’re planning on using a doula, you’ll want to find one early in your pregnancy so you can get on their schedule (good doulas book up quickly…).

Items to put on a birth plan

Some items that you may want to consider putting on your birth plan include:

The type of delivery you would like to have (vaginal, c-section, etc.).

Pain relief options you would like to try (epidural, IV pain medication, massage, etc.).

What you would like your doctor and hospital staff to do in case of an emergency.

Who or what family members would like to be in the delivery room with you.

I actually have a free birth plan template and tips right here:

Pack your hospital bag with everything you’ll need

Now that you’re armed with some tips on how to prepare for childbirth, it’s time to pack your hospital bag! This list will help you pack everything you’ll need for a safe and comfortable delivery.

Grab my free hospital packing list right here:

To get you started, here are a few things to consider:

A change of clothes for you and your partner

Toiletries, such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and a toothbrush

Comfortable clothes to wear during labor, such as a loose-fitting gown or tank top

A going-home outfit for you and your baby

A nursing bra and a few breast pads

Nipple cream

Entertainment, such as books, magazines, or a tablet loaded with videos.

Your birth plan and other important documents (like insurance information and ID).

Phone charger

Ear plugs and eye mask, if you want to try some light sleep (or if your partner snores).

Car Seat

Enroll in a childbirth class to learn more about labor, birth & postpartum

If you’re feeling nervous about childbirth, enroll in a childbirth class to learn more about the process. These classes will teach you everything you need to know about giving birth, from the early stages of labor to delivery and post-birth care. They’re a great way to prepare for the big day and to get any questions you have answered by an expert.

Finding a good childbirth educator that you trust is paramount in this process. They can discuss medical interventions more in dept with you than your health care provider will be able to in this process. Make sure you find someone with LOTS of experience.

I took a hospital class with my first, but it didn’t prepare me at all (it mostly just made me a good patient).

I love that this class can be:

Done with your partner to make them a teammate instead of just cheerleader (or even a bystander)

Done virtually on demand— a GREAT option for busy couples who want to get prepared, but not overwhelmed

Covers all aspects including 3rd trimester testing, unplanned interventions and managing life after baby.

Many people call that class a “one stop shop” for birth & baby prep!

Most people start a birth class in the second or third trimester (I have a whole post on when to take a prenatal class).

You may also want to consider a breastfeeding class taught by a lactation consultant or educator. That class includes one in the bundle!

When you’re looking for a class, be sure to find a class that covers:

The stages of labor

How to relax during labor

What pain relief options are available

What to expect during a c-section delivery

What to expect in the hospital after the birth of your baby

How to care for your newborn baby (and their umbilical cord)

What to expect during the postpartum period

How partner help can be a lifesaver

How to make an informed decision with your healthcare team

Did you know that taking a prenatal class reduces your chance of a cesarean section by 10%. There’s so many benefits that go beyond just helping you feel more ready. Read the studies here.

Get your insurance in order

Birth can be a pricey affair if you’re having a home birth or giving birth in a private hospital. If you don’t have insurance, a local hospital may have a social worker you can talk to about insurance options. It is much easier to deal with this during your 40 weeks of pregnancy rather than at the birth.

Your insurance may even cover a birth class!

Learn about the different stages of labor and what to expect

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also be a little daunting, especially when it comes to childbirth. Learning about the different stages of labor can help to ease some of your anxiety.

There are three stages of labor: early labor, active labor, and transition labor.

Early labor is the longest stage and lasts for an average of 8-12 hours, during which time your cervix will slowly open and contractions will intensify.

Active labor is the shortest stage and occurs when your cervix opens to 10 centimeters.

Transition labor signals your body’s transition from active labor to pushing, which typically lasts for an average of 2 hours. With the right preparation and support, you can successfully navigate each stage of labor and welcome your baby into the world.

Most childbirth education classes will go into this in detail.

Want to know more about the stages of labor? — check out these posts:

Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and visualization

One of the best ways to prepare for childbirth is to practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing techniques and visualization. These techniques can help you stay calm and relaxed during labor time, which can make the experience easier and less stressful. Ask your doctor or childbirth class instructor for more tips on how to relax during delivery.

Many people think that if they are planning for an epidural, they can skip that step. I’ve found that to be a mistake, and I recommend ALL couples learn about it. This class includes one in both options.

Often these breathing exercises help you to relax your pelvic floor muscles, so the baby can find an easier way out of your pelvis. Practicing this is a great start! You can also take prenatal yoga classes that also help with this as well.

Things that may not help prepare you:

Perineal massage — studies are mixed as to if this helps or hurts. It does seem like it can help if it’s your first baby, but I’d talk with your doctor or midwife to see if they think it will help in your case and how to best do it. I have a whole article on it.

Listening to birth stories — I find it’s rare to hear positive birth stories. Many relate the trauma the woman may have felt after delivery and postpartum. Be mindful if the stories are scaring you, if so they are likely not helping.

So, what can you do right now to prepare for childbirth?

Honestly, the best way is to take a childbirth class. These classes offer information on relaxation techniques, how to breathe, various labor positions, pain relief options, and some tips related to basic newborn care. If you haven’t taken one yet, it’s not too late! There are SO many options anymore (vs when I had babies – I needed to sign up at my hospital at 10 weeks pregnant). I would encourage you to find one that works for you

If you enjoyed this post I think you’ll like this class as well. Remember it is…

Easily done in just a few hours (on your couch with snacks!)

Taught by a highly educated professional

Affordable — the three price points are meant for any budget.

I often hear people wanting to know how to have a “natural” birth at the hospital. It’s important to know that “natural labor” or natural childbirth looks different for everyone. Some people prefer the terms holistic of physiologic birth. Either way, this article is going to help you clarify what that means for YOU and give you tips to achieve the birth you’re hoping for.

One of the worst things you can do is “tie” yourself to a specific type of birth. It’s SMART to have hopes and desires, but with something SO unpredictable as birth you need to remain flexible.

Ok, so — what are most people talking about when they say a “natural birth”? Most people equate it with:

Unmedicated Birth

There’s two main types of medications given surrounding birth (there are more than these but most often those are given for specific health or labor issues which we will talk about later in this post — so keep reading).

Induction Medications

Most often people hoping for a “natural” birth are hoping not to be induced. An induction of labor is when we start labor at the hospital. Either by mechanical means (like a foley bulb) or medications like Pitocin or Cytotec.

This can be done for a variety of reasons, or after 39 weeks, in most places, people can choose to be induced — which is called an elective induction.

Clearly, if you’re hoping for a natural labor you’d refuse an elective induction and think very deeply if you need to be induced for whatever medical reason they are giving you.

Understanding the 3rd trimester testing is SO important (and the majority of people have some 3rd trimester testing). You need to know what the test it testing for to understand the results, we talk about all of that in here. So many people just skip that and take the results as a reason to be induced, but it’s a really important time to advocate for yourself and your priorities.

At the same point, if you don’t want to be induced in the hospital (one of the few ways to guarantee to go into labor) then you should also not be trying random weird methods to go into labor at home. If you’re really wanting nature to take it’s course, allow it to do so.

If you want to be induced (and there is NOTHING wrong with that — pregnancy is MISERABLE in the end) then ask them about that. Keep in mind that while castor oil is available without a prescription it doesn’t mean that it’s safe.

This is one of the important times to NOT be tied to a specific plan. If you’re at your wit’s end and your cervix is favorable and you just want to be done — is there truly a reason to wait? I can’t answer that, but I would ask you to think about that deep inside.

Want to know more about inductions? — check out these posts:

6 Things to Know About Your Fetal Growth Ultrasound

And, if you’re considering an induction, be sure to grab my checklist of things to review with your provider:

Ok, here’s the other medication most people want to avoid:

Pain Medications

Of course, those come in several forms:

IV pain medication, nitrous oxide or the epidural.

IV pain medication is VERY much mis-understood and I did a whole podcast on it. It’s a valid option if you just need something to get you through those last few centimeters and get some rest.

Many people go-in thinking they want a natural birth and find a nice compromise in either IV pain medication or nitrous oxide.

Once again — smart to not be so tied to your birth plan that you end up being so tired and miserable during labor you can’t even enjoy that new baby — compromise is a win!

The Epidural

The majority of women in the United States end-up getting an epidural. I would say that the minority come-into labor planning to get one (although that’s probably pretty close).

I would agree that the epidural is very much not natural, but many women find that it increases their joy in birth, they’re able to rest more and enjoy the process more.

I also think that sometimes your body just can’t relax with how much pain you’re in, and your cervix is part of your body. Sometimes that epidural helps you entirely relax and BOOM it’s time for baby.

I am not going to dive too deeply into the epidural here, but I have a ton of posts on it:

Epidurals During Pregnancy & Labor

How Many CM Do You Need to Be to Get An Epidural?

Weird Side Effects from The Epidural That No One Talks About

What to Do If You Can’t Decide if You Want an Epidural or Not?

Is a “Walking Epidural” A Real Thing?

I’ve also set-out some easy ways to understand your pain management options you can grab here:

Ok, now that you’ve hopefully defined what “natural birth” means for you — let’s talk about some tips to getting yours:

Birth Tips for a Natural Birth

These certainly are not ALL my tips, but I wanted to give you a few of them here. If you want more I’d recommend taking this.

Understand Third Trimester Testing

Once again — I think it’s SO important to understand that testing you might get at the end of pregnancy.

Know what the test will include so you’re not caught off-guard

Know what it’s measuring

Know how to talk to your provider about why they ordered it (knowing more about the test makes you feel SO much more confident in this discussion)

Know the basics of what the results mean, so you can dive deep with your provider on what the risks/benefits are of moving forward with your plans.

This is an area entirely forgotten by a lot of people.

They just think that if your provider offers an induction you should take it. BUT, that’s not the case.

There are VERY FEW clear-cut cases in labor and delivery. Most often you can have the test repeated in a few days, see how you’re feeling and just take it a step at a time.

I talked with one of my favorite OB’s about this on my podcast — it is a GREAT listen:

Be SURE that when you take a birth class, that it includes these big choices leading up to your due date and labor. Your education does NOT start at labor. I recommend this class — it’s fast, affordable and quick. Plus it really prepares you from pregnancy all the way through your first few months after baby is born.

Not Using Medication Labor Tips

This is the one that most people jump to in their brain. My best three tips for this are:

Practice labor breathing early and often (it is taught in that class)

Labor at home as long as is safe (knowing how to labor at home is tricky and you need an expert to really talk you through what to do, and how partners can best assist you during this time (that’s their time to shine).

Bad news time: There often isn’t a magical “this is when you go to the hospital” trick that works for everyone. Check out my post on how to know when to go to the hospital for more on that.

Take it a step at a time. It’s easy to think that the pain is going to get exponentially worse, but sometimes it doesn’t.

The good news is that most medical birth pain management can happen fairly quickly (especially IV meds) — so if the pain does start to swallow you, you have options. BUT don’t get pain medication just because you’re afraid of what the pain will become.

I have lots of things to do at home, and ways to breathe and have your partner help support you in here. But, those are three good tips to get you started.

Perineal Massage

I honestly had read a few studies that had soured me on this — but I recently did a deeper dive into perineal massage and how it can make for easy labor (or at least easier labor).

I would recommend reading my full post on perineal massage, but here are a few things to know:

It has been shown to reduce larger tears/episiotomies

It has been shown to decrease birth trauma

If you’ve already had a baby the benefits are a bit different

Honestly, getting a bit more familiar with a part of your body you’ve avoided most of your life isn’t a bad idea either — BUT, it’s not for everyone so be sure to ask your provider if it’s right for you and they may even have some tips (and some packets of lube) to make it easier.

Understand Reality

I often say that I thought being a mom with a newborn would be like having a new purse I just hauled places. I was super wrong. I think that the reality of pregnancy, birth (as well as hauling around something that is WAY more complicated than a new purse) really hit hard for a lot of people.

So, I would encourage you to actually understand what real birth looks like.

Unfortunately, you’re not going to get that from:

The media — honestly, so bad — so, so bad for the VAST majority of instances

Birth stories — people have a selective memory ESPECIALLY on social media, it’s bad

Your provider — they really just don’t have time to explain all of it.

I’d 100% recommend taking a birth class (also called prenatal classes, or childbirth prep). I recommend this one but you definitely want one:

Taught by an actual expert (I prefer a labor and delivery RN over doula or childbirth educator because they really understand reality and complications)

Information begins for during pregnancy (complications that should trigger a call or a visit and 3rd trimester testing) and be informative all the way through your first weeks/months postpartum

Should cover common interventions so you’re not caught off-guard and you know how to talk with your providers to make the best choice for you

Far too many classes only talk about pain management, or pelvic floor health (?), but most people find that talking with their team and making choices to be the hardest part of having a baby — so you want to be SURE that yours includes a lot on that as well.

This one even has a provider communication simulation bonus that people really find helpful.

Natural Birthing Plan

Ok, I 100% recommend having set in your mind what you’d like your natural birth to look like. Not what it WILL look like, but what you’d like.

Kind of like a vision board — pie in the sky thinking. That sort of thing. Something you think about purposefully and then leave it in God’s (or mother nature, or whoever’s) hands.

It also really helps your labor team clarify what a “natural birth” looks like for you.

I have a TON of posts on hospital birth plans, including a natural birth plan — but I think your best bet is to take my quick (and free) birth plan series. It comes with a birth plan template, some options and I walk you through how it can be the most helpful to both your team and you. You can easily get it right here:

I will give you this one pro tip:

Discuss that birth plan early and often. Once you have it done (or even mostly done) take it to your appointments to talk through with your provider. SO important, and an easily-missed step.

Want more on birth plans? — check out these posts:

Natural Baby Delivery Options

Ok, at delivery there are a few more specific options that not a lot of people think about.

How to Push

You’ll hear a lot of talk about:

Spontaneous pushing

Patient directed-pushing

Not being on your back.

I have a whole post that talk about how to push out a baby. But, if you want the VERY SHORT cliff notes, here it is:

Do a variety of things, and see what works for you. Continue to vary it until birth.

One of the weird expectations is that pushing doesn’t take long — I have a whole post on how long pushing takes, but the reality is it’s often a couple of hours+. Another one of those expectations meets reality points that I help with in here.

Using Forceps/Vacuum

Many people don’t know about forceps and vacuums. I go over both in detail in here (lesson 5), but your provider may recommend some assistance from their end with these items close to delivery.

They definitely have risks and benefits and you should understand them before you employ them.

They aren’t used often, but many people don’t think of them as “natural”. However, they can prevent cesareans or help baby out in situations there at the end. I’m a fan when used properly.

Delayed Cord Clamping

This one gets a lot of talk online. You’ll hear some people saying to wait til’ it stops pulsating, or til’ it’s white.

Standard of care is waiting 30-60 seconds. I haven’t seen many studies that show true benefit beyond that point.

The other reality is that many cords are pretty sure and you can’t really see baby until that cord is cut — so it’s nice to balance both baby getting the blood flow and being able to hold and love something you’ve worked so long for.

Fun Fact: As soon as the cord is in air it starts to clamp off. So, it’s not like blood just flows easily until it’s clamped — mother nature has set it to “stop” so baby isn’t harmed if it breaks, etc.

Vaccines & Medications for Baby

You’re going to have the choice of a few vaccines/medications for baby after birth:

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Vitamin K shot

Erythromycin ointment

While some might not say these are “natural” I think you’ll find that often “natural” ended in death for some babies (think about our pioneer ancestors and the infant death rate back then). I would encourage you to talk with your OB and prospective pediatrician about these options to see what’s right for you. My kids got all 3 for a variety of reasons, mostly that I didn’t see any harm and I did see a lot of benefit if they became necessary.

“Natural” is such a weird term and I want it to mean that you’re balancing allowing mother nature to take her course, while also utilizing resources of science and technology to have the best outcome. It doesn’t mean that you’re alone in the forest having your baby and biting through the cord on your own and then eating the placenta. That seem the most natural, but I’m guessing that’s not what you mean. And also, ew .

I do want to say that as a nurse I am a HUGE believer in as little intervention as possible unless there’s some big benefits. I think most practitioners feel this way — so using those people on your team to talk things through can be super helpful.

Pregnancy Problems Affecting Natural Birth

Ok, now it’s time to talk about those problems that might affect “natural” birth.

Maybe you have preeclampsia and you need to be induced, that induction takes a long time as you’re early and you end-up wanting an epidural. You’re also so tired you end up needing a little help at the end with a vacuum. BUT, you get your delayed cord clamping and a beautiful hour of skin to skin after birth.

Maybe your water breaks early and you’re just so tired by the time labor kicks in you need something for the pain to get some rest. Baby ends-up needing some antibiotics and a stay in the NICU, but you’re able to start pumping right away and spend lots of time in the NICU with them, even if it’s not what you hoped for.

There are a LOT of things that can happen in pregnancy that may change what we value at that point in time.

You likely value a healthy baby (and a healthy you, although you don’t think about it as much) over almost anything when you really think about it — and that’s OK. That’s natural and normal. I believe your healthcare team also values that.

I honestly think that birth is very similar to driving on the freeways of Southern California (if you’ve never been there — think MANY freeways and LOTS of traffic). There are MANY ways to get to your destination. The may not be the way that you initially thought of, but it gets you where you want to go.

If you get on the freeway thinking I am ONLY going to take the 505 today, you may be waiting a LONG time if there’s an accident on there. You may not even get to your destination safely. Or, you could take a side street, or another freeway that would get you there close to on time and safely.

This is NOT to say that healthy mom/healthy baby is the only thing that matters but I do think that:

Having realistic expectations of what “natural” may end-up looking like

Talking through your plans early with your providers (doctors and nurses) so they can alert you to any “traffic issues” they see coming up

Focusing on the positive in the situation you are given

Those are the KEYS to a successful birth.

Let me help you get those expectations in check. Let me talk with you about options, as well as interventions that may happen so you’re not caught off-guard thinking labor prep is just about pain management.

As you can see it’s so much more, and I would be honored to be the one to walk you through it.

The Online Prenatal Class for Couples is:

Quick – the main class is under 3 hours

Affordable – about 66% less than the average cost of birth classes

Thorough – all of my experience prepares you for what you NEED to know from bump to bassinet.

oh, an did I mention it’s there to turn your partner from a cheerleader into a teammate? Yup, it’s pretty great.

Today we’re going to deep dive into a study on what parents (especially first time parents) wish they had known about before birth. The fact is that often parents have regrets that they were more prepared before going into labor room — so if you (who is likely still pregnant) can learn about these things, you’ll be a step ahead, right? So, let’s get you prepared.

I’m taking this article from a study out of Pennsylvania in the US that interviewed 3006 one month after their first time giving birth.

The study is here. It is in the August, 2024 issue of Birth Issues in Prenatal Care.

Let me share the initial findings:

A total of 441 women (14.7%) reported there was something they would like to have known before their first childbirth. Women described that communication with care providers was their main concern. They would have liked a better understanding of their options before birth, more agency in decision-making, and more information about the topics of their body, their birth, their baby, and what to expect beyond birth.

So, how can YOU make a difference in your birth? Let’s talk about it….

Quick Skim Notes — I recommend this class that covers all the things they mention in the study, it really is your one-stop-shop birth prep!

Communicating With Your Provider

As a mom, with young adult children I know how hard it is for them to call and make an appointment, little LONE actually speak to them about an actual problem. If you feel nervous talking to your provider I have a few tips for you:

Remember they’re just a person. Doctors are quirky, fun people just like the rest of us and there is no reason to be nervous to talk to them. They just went to a LOT of school.

You are paying them a LOT of money. They should be listening to you. Sometimes insurance takes this bit out of our hands, but really you need to get your money’s worth.

They often won’t volunteer information as some patients don’t want that, so feel free to ask more questions!

In fact, even 2021 I realized this was such an issue I created a provider communication bonus video in my prenatal class where I roleplay scenarios in talking with providers to make it easier for you.

Honestly, no shame in role-playing asking your provider questions with a friend. We only get good at doing things by practicing them. It may seem silly or goofy, but will be WELL worth it if you end up having a great delivery because of it!

There is NO reason to be embarrassed about talking with your provider, and I encourage you to speak up more in prenatal appointments and get your questions answered early so you’re used to it! Providers EXPECT questions (and can’t read your mind).

Options During Delivery

Women wished they knew more options during delivery. Which makes total sense.

Often providers only mention what they think is best, rather than going through your options.

However, you can ALWAYS Ask — good questions to ask are:

Is there anything else we can do instead?

What if we waited? Is that bad right now?

Are there other medications we can try? (obviously if you’re talking medications)

Often those are ones that get the conversation started and then you can go from there.

Honestly, taking a class that goes over most of your options is your best bet here.

Providers just don’t have time to go over all the options in labor during prenatal appointments, and often when they do in labor patients find that they’re overwhelmed and just not sure what to do.

Learning things in advance is SO important in these tense situations like birth.

I think doing a birth plan is a great start (grab my tips right here):

But, I really recommend a full class to get prepared for your options — and knowing them in advance as you take the class in your third trimester is going to be SO helpful!

What Will Happen to My Body?

How an induction will feel

What will happen to me in a cesarean

Do I have to deliver on my back?

Women today have a lot of bodily autonomy, and they expect that to extend into the medical sphere. And, sadly, the medical community isn’t always great at that.

Again, the more questions you can ask about what is going on with you and YOUR situation can be so helpful. Especially with inductions. MANY people are caught off-guard by how long and almost annoying they are — which is why I have this induction questionnaire for you:

In reading the study it was a lot of what happens to your body during a cesarean or directly at birth though. Especially during surgery we do have to position, and do things to make safety for both you and your team a priority.

People love that in my class I go over….

How the room will feel

What you’ll hear

What’s going to go on after they make you numb (you’ll see it, but likely won’t feel most of it).

Just gives them a sense of control over something that seems so very out of control. I don’t do it just for cesareans, but because that is so foreign to most people it’s a good example for you.

What happens at birth?

Birth can feel very traumatic if you don’t know what’s going on. Information on how an induction happens, if you were to tear (or be cut) — what that all looks like and what types of choices you have.

Let me be very clear that modern media has not done us any favors in what birth will look like. You’re often filled with fantasies and when reality hits, it often brings trauma with it — so don’t look to media to fill it for you.

Just like I talked about with a cesarean knowing things like:

Baby will be very goopy, and likely bloody after delivery when they put them on your chest

How you’ll have a couple of nurses right by you to help with you and baby

That the placenta still has to be delivered

How you can ask for dad to hold baby if you’re feeling overwhelmed — it can be a LOT

It just helps you know what the steps are going to be — you don’t feel like you’re in an unfamiliar country. That’s why a birth class can really be a game changer.

They Want Predictability

I think with the “advancement of science” women think we know more than we actually do. They think we know when babies will be born, and how birth will go based on their history.

I was sort of amused (but also sad) when I read this, I think we do give a sense of we “know” what’s going to happen — but in reality we all have no idea. It’s why it makes the L&D unit a fun (and sometimes scary) place to work.

The reality is that you can know about the stages of labor (I have a bonus video on that in here) that are pretty predictive of what your body will go through, but as far as timing and other things…. we just don’t know til’ it happens!

Letting go of the myth of control is one of the things I think you have to let go of before going to have your baby. Getting prepared, oddly, can somehow help make that easier!

One of the hardest things about working in the birth field is that we have to let you know the risks (like having a big baby) without actually knowing if it is a problem. That’s why they call it practicing medicine… unfortunately.

What happens AFTER birth?

Things like breastfeeding, or that some babies have to go to the NICU caught moms off-guard.

They also highlighted postpartum pain and how they weren’t prepared for it either.

Honestly, this was a huge issue for myself. I took a hospital-based class with my first baby and I wasn’t prepared at ALL for what life held after baby was born.

Some birth classes still seem to want to keep that all a secret, but I couldn’t be more different — I have 2 full chapters on life after baby is born to help you get prepared and stay safe when baby is home.

Oh, and did I mention my bundle class actually even includes breastfeeding? Yeah, I think of all the things.

What should childbirth education focus on?

The study highlighted a few things that childbirth education should include:

1. Normal physiology of pregnancy and childbirth.

2. Managing normal birth with a variety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, which are included and demonstrated during classes, to support labour.

3. Explanation of common interventions and expectations of hospital care, risks and benefits, and evidence-based care.

4. Shared decision-making—care options and hospital procedures (autonomy).

5. Promotion of initiation and duration of breastfeeding to enhance bonding and normal physiological processes for the postnatal period.

6. Postnatal—caring for baby and me, and strengthening social support among participants for postnatal support.

And honestly, I am so proud to say that as I read this study my class checks off EACH of these things. Plus, it gives you lots of outside resources if you want to know more on a particular topic too.

Lesson #5 goes through what to expect from both your body and hospital staff as you get into active labor (I also have a phases of labor bonus video that a lot of people find helpful)

Lesson #7 goes through the different pain management options including IV, epidural and I have a natural pain management bonus video included with all classes.

Lesson #5 and #8 go through common interventions in labor and at delivery so you know about your options in advance.

In every lesson I talk about informed consent, shared decision making and how you can take charge of your own birth in relation to whatever we’re talking about.

I have a bonus video on breastfeeding done by one of my trusted IBCLC friends.

In Lessons #11 and #12 I talk about how to heal best, how to stay healthy and integrate your baby & village into your healing process

I truly believe The Online Prenatal Class for Couples is the most complete birth class out there. I want to price it so any couple can afford it (including split payments), and I try to make it as easy as possible to do (so that you actually DO it). The main basics really take just 3 hours — and is done in less than 20 minute chunks that are easily absorbed.

SO many people think that they can cover these topics on their own through articles, social media or in talking with friends. But I have to say, invest in a class that will cover it beginning to end to get you prepared today. I promise it costs less than you think (payment plans available).

Hospital birth classes used to be the standard for expecting parents, but now there are alternatives to that form of learning. Many are actually more effective than the prior form of learning, which I am sure you will appreciate.

But, before we start I want you to know that I actually taught classes for my hospital (and I LOVED it). I have also been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of labor and delivery nursing experience.

BUT I found that they just weren’t filling the needs of parents — so I looked for good alternatives. This is what I now recommend. I am a huge fan. But, let’s talk about why….

Alternatives to Hospital Prenatal Classes

There are some other options to hospital classes, let’s first talk about why hospital classes may not have been as worth it as we think they are:

What’s Wrong With Hospital Classes?

They’re at a Hospital — and Hospitals are Confusing

I can’t tell you how much time was spent looking for the room the class was in by couples. They’d often end-up in labor and delivery. Also, parking is ALWAYS an issue at hospitals. #sigh

Strict Timelines

I taught classes at 6-9 on Tuesday nights. Honestly, it was a horrible time for me (I wanted to be at home with my family) and pregnancy couples were tired, or often missing. So often one or more partner had to miss a session because of life. No good.

One Time Only

Yes, they might provide you with some hand-outs, but if you zone out for a few minutes you’re out of luck for what was taught at that time. No rewind, no replay. Not being able to go back and review is a big issue.

And, because of all of this — I now recommend this.

What are the Alternatives To Hospital Childbirth Classes?

Traditionally, there’s been one big issue to non-hospital based classes.

Most often they were for people who didn’t plan on delivering in a hospital. Those who planned a home birth, a birthing center birth, or planned to refuse much of the regular standards of care in a hospital.

Which, frankly, isn’t most of the population (or even close to it).

Most people want a fairly standard hospital birth. But, instead outside the hospital they found classes from “natural” doulas. And that wasn’t what they were looking for.

Also, these educators weren’t always vetted. Who knows how much experience they had (and what biases they had towards different types of birth).

I knew an online hospital-based birth class was the best option. The Online Prenatal Class for Couples is just that.

The Online Prenatal Class for Couples

This class is aimed to prepare couples for their confident birth in just a few hours. Really fixing the majority of the issues from hospital classes.

On Your Own Timeline: No more missed classes — and both partners can attend every session, even if they have crazy schedules.

Replays Encouraged: Miss a session because you had to pee? No issue, just back it up, or even replay the whole thing while you’re ready to concentrate.

A Great Teacher: Many hospital classes are taught by busy labor nurses who are great nurses, but possibly not great instructors. With this class you can be sure that the teacher has already prepped thousands of couples. The reviews tell how great it is. Her 20 years of experience is given to you in just a few hours on your couch.

Key Point Review: This classes is created to make SURE you understand the important parts. Couples absolutely LOVE the key point videos you can watch for a quick review (even when you’re in labor).

Covers It All: Sometimes, in person I’d forget a point or two. Doesn’t happen with this online class. Each and every time you’re getting my very best information. Plus, I update it yearly to make sure you have the up to date information you want.

Just for You: Honestly, the worst part of prenatal classes is the couple in the front row asking 400 useless questions that you don’t want to hear the answer to. None of that in here. You can ask questions — but it’s just for you.

Less Bias?: Honestly, I never was pushed to teach one thing or another by my hospital (they were desperate for teachers, so they were mostly just happy we were there. However, I have heard that some hospitals push compliance rather than learning how to make the best choice for yourself. With a non-hospital based class, you’re likely learning more about how to question what’s going on and how to make choices based on their input (rather than, we recommend you do xyz).

Couples-Based: While you don’t have to be a couple to take this class, it is targeted to engage dad in each and every step. I even have a couples workbook to help you two consider a lot about life after baby together (plus some delivery plans as well).

In addition to this:

The class can be completed in just a few hours if desired.

Lots of vetted outside information if you are interested.

Comes in 3 price points for every budget and need.

Countless studies show that a birth class can change everything in your first steps into parenthood. But, what does that actually mean for people? Tangible ways in which a birth class changed people’s birth. Let’s talk with some couples that felt they did a few things to make their birth better. Be sure to save this post as one of your top pregnancy planning resources to help you prepare for labor!

I’m a HUGE advocate for taking a birth class — I recommend this one.

What do studies show?

There is a LOT of data the shows birth classes are well worth the time and money that invest into them.

Birth classes improve birth outcomes by decreasing anxiety, making appropriate expectations, and increasing communication with your birth team.

It decreases birth trauma.

While birth classes can seem expensive (average cost of $187 for a basic class, and $307 for one bundled with more information). There is a very affordable one. Plus, we are finding that more and more insurance will cover it.

Like I said above — yes, the studies show it’s important but you may want to know tangible changes that each person may experience.

I Knew What To Expect No Matter What

Morgan and Jon shared that when they were driving to the hospital they knew what to expect, no matter what that day held.

It’s so important to take a class that includes:

Induction

Unmedicated labor

Epidurals

Cesareans

Vaginal births

There is not way to be sure what type of birth you will have — so, preparing for ALL of it makes you feel extra prepared for all of it.

Some birth classes like to split it off, or prepare just for a C-section or just an induction — to me, that’s just not smart. You just don’t know what will happen.

Laugh at What Used to Make You Cry

Humor can make things so much more relatable. Taking a class from someone who uses humor, and personal experiences makes things less scary. Suddenly you see things are pretty simple (and less scary). Tyler said:

Hillary is so funny and down to earth and made everything less scary.

Tyler B an Online Prenatal Class for Couples participant

How the Hospital Works

The hospital is a different place. Sometimes you envision something in your head, and then it’s entirely different. Rachel found that to be super helpful about a class. She liked knowing she’d start in a room, and then move to the operating room for the c-section.

Rachel went-in knowing she was going to have a Cesarean (her baby was breech), so she loved those details knowing what to expect each step of the way. I find that especially for moms who have a cesarean section. Knowing the room’s cold, we’re going to count a lot, when the catheter will go in — it’s just SUPER helpful.

Want to know more about birth classes, check out these posts:

Reason You’ll Want A Birth Class On Your Second+ Baby

Birth Cramming

A lot of patients want to do that quick review before they go to the hospital — like how we’d cram for finals back in the day. It just makes you feel more sure of yourself as you walk into that unknown situation.

“We were able to go at our own pace and go back and review information as needed. It was like getting all the info you need from a friend. Definitely recommend!”

Maureen, HR manager, and Online Prenatal Class for Couples Participant

In fact, this is the reason I love that The Online Prenatal Class for Couples has key point videos — so parents can quickly cram back in the information they’ve already learned.

Don’t Get Overwhelmed by Info

A lot of hospitals offer a Saturday birth class that is like a firehose of birth information. A lot of people find that really overwhelming (or, they just shut-down and don’t actually learn anything).

I recommend learning bit by bit, or “bite by bite”. Crystal said that it was SO nice to just have small chunks so that she and her husband could digest each one before moving on. They ended-up being REALLY glad they didn’t take a marathon class that would have overwhelmed them.

Take Care of You While You Get Prepared

Make sure that you’re finding a class that fits you. Sydney said that it sounded exhausting to do a full class after a day at work. She and her husband found a class that allowed them to watch it while they cuddled on the couch with their dog:

“Such a great experience to take the class in the comfort of our own home! With me teaching & my husband commuting to the city, we just didn’t have the energy to do something in person. Pulled it up on the tv, had fires & cuddled w/ our pup!”

Sydney, a Teacher & Online Prenatal Class for Couples Participant

We know that everyone is different and has different needs — having one that fits YOUR needs is a form of self care. It reminds you that you deserve that in labor, birth and life after baby — so it’s smart to fit things to YOU early on!

Start Early

Many people think you shouldn’t do a birth class until close to delivery, but Amber found that starting early really helped her feel prepared and confident as she went through her pregnancy towards birth.

Taking a class allowed her to….

Go With the Flow

When Amber‘s provider recommended a cesarean section, she felt comfortable going with the flow and doing what everyone felt was best.

Don’t take a birth class that pegs you into one type of birth, but allows you to get confident in yourself, and your birth team so you can find the plan that is best for you and baby.

She also said friends have you used YouTube and found themselves unprepared for a lot of birth — so she also said to make sure to take a class that prepares you for the whole thing.

Find Someone With Experience

Some classes are taught by childbirth educators or doulas who may have seen a few births, mostly vaginal. It’s better to take a class from someone who has lots of experience through many types of birth.

Katy knew she was going to have a C-section so, taking a class from someone who’s done hundreds of them. It made for an amazing experience where they knew just what to expect.

Again, taking a class from someone with lots of experience who covers all. the. things. — that seems to be what everyone recommends.

And, a few more birth class posts if you want even more info:

Prepare With Your Partner

Make sure that you involve your partner in your birth preparations. They can be HUGE in your birth story, but often you have to prepare them. Toni said it was amazing to take it with her husband, or go through the couples questions with him in this class

Learn to Communicate with Your Provider

Toni also learned how to best communicate with your provider about your birth.

Learning how to ask questions (and sometimes even what to ask) can be hard for people. It also helps when your PARTNER wants to get involved in asking the questions and involved in your care.

This also includes, possibly, finding the right provider for you. There’s nothing wrong with switching if someone isn’t a good fit.

Don’t Forget Your Third Trimester

It can be easy to think that you use your preparation once you go into labor — but a good birth class should talk about third trimester testing. Toni mentioned that knowing what the tests were helped her decide if she wanted them, and why.

A birth class should support you from the day you start it until weeks/months after baby is born.

Taking a birth class leads to better births. I recommend The Online Prenatal Class for Couples. You’ll find that it:

Involves mom & partner

Includes pregnancy, labor, birth & life after baby is born

Can be done in small bites (but just takes 3 hours if you do it all at once)

Is fun and engaging, so you actually learn rather than checking off a box

Is taught by an experienced RN that knows the things you need to know about ALL types of birth.

You hear a lot of thoughts about birth class online. Some people think they’re helpful, some don’t — but today I want to dispel 5 myths about birth class that you need to stop believing it.

And, how did I come to all these conclusions (frankly, I’d call them facts) — it comes from being at the bedside of thousands of births, teaching birth classes at my hospital and seeing the outcomes from people who take classes. I’m so glad you’re here, because we (as a society) need to stop believing these!

If you’re looking for a birth class that dispells these lies — I recommend The Online Prenatal Class for Couples.

Take One That Focuses on Pain

This is the one that’s been promoted FAR too long. That birth class is just about managing the pain of labor.

Yes, managing pain is a part of every good birth class, but it isn’t the MAIN part of birth class. We’re strong women who need to make our own choices — and we really need to understand how to do that in the medical system.

A good class can really do that. AND a lot of pain comes from the anxiety of the unknown — so, getting that out of the way by being informed can actually help a LOT!

Truth: Take a well-rounded birth class that focuses on making you the captain of this birth!

You Don’t Need To Know About the “Medical Stuff”

I see a LOT of birth classes that focus on the physiology of birth, and again — pain mangement.

They entirely skip all the interventions you may face as you go through your birth.

Then, 5 nurses charge in your room asking you to turn, giving you IV fluids and maybe even some oxygen and you’re freaked out — even though 80% of pregnant people experience that intervention during their labor….

Take a class that shares:

Common interventions in labor

Inductions (and making the choice)

C-sections (which means you need to learn from someone who’s been in a lot of them).

Truth: Take a birth class from someone who understands medical interventions and how to make choices when circumstances change.

Hospital Classes Are Best

The hospital class has been the standard for a LONG time. And I get it — that person is vetted by the hospital, so you know that they’re a good source of information.

BUT, times have changed, and the way we get information has changed.

And, as someone who’s taught hospital classes, hospital classes have NOT changed.

They tend to be at inconvenient times. They tend to involve a lot of finding a parking spot, and hard hospital chairs.

They’re just tough. That isn’t to say that the hospital doesn’t provide a good class. I really think they do — I just think there’s better options.

I will also say that as an instructor you’re often “run off the rails” by someone who wants all their nit-picky questions answered in front of the whole class (including the color of their discharge). Honestly, being in a class without other people has it’s benefits.

Truth: While they can be great, hospital classes haven’t changed much in the last 20 years, but how you learn HAS changed — there’s better options!

Just Ask Your Provider

A lot of people think they won’t need a class because their provider can review it at their office visits.

Man, I wish this was true. But that isn’t particularly effective and most providers can’t spend all that time going through all of birth with you.

I think it’s important to go through the basics on your own — and save that precious prenatal appointment time to learn how all of the basics apply to YOU — get deeper questions answered by your provider!

Truth: Your time with your provider needs to focus on how pregnancy is progressing for you and how that may affect your birth. Learn the basics on your own, so you can use that time more effectively.

Only Mom Needs It

Often people only think mom needs to sit in the birth class, but I can’t dispell this one any more.

Your want a teammate in the labor room — not just a cheerleader sitting off the side.

There are things your partner can do when they’re in labor and you will feel SO much better having them in the game with you.

BUT they can only be in the game if they know how to play — so them getting prepared is a big win.

Truth: Be sure to take a birth class that includes your partner (and works with both of your schedules).

Just Follow Some People Online…

I hear this one most of all — I’ve watched some videos, and I follow some people online — so I think I’m ready.

And I get that, I LOVE engaging with my communities online and I love how my preparation deepens their knowledge.

BUT endless scrolling of my posts, videos or podcasts wont’ prepare you like a class can.

In fact, the class can save you a TON of time from all that scrolling — and you know you’re not missing something.

Truth: Following some people online won’t be enough preparation for your birth — you need a class that goes from beginning to end of the pregnancy > labor > birth > postpartum experience.

Bonus Lie:

This isn’t so much a “lie” but more about how many classes are laid out. They’re really just about LABOR, not so much about life after baby is out.

How to cope with a new baby

How to heal yourself, while also coping with a new baby

How to keep your relationship, heal and cope with a new baby.

All of those things are so important, and planning ahead can make them so much easier. So, be sure to take a class that has some postpartum tips as well!

Truth: Take a class that shows a focus on postpartum as well as birth. It will serve you VERY well!

Getting prepared for birth really isn’t complicated, as long as you do it with someone who knows what you need to know — and hasn’t bought into the lies of previous generations about how women birth.

The Online Prenatal Class for Couples is:

Taught by an expert

Takes only 3 hours for the “meat” of the class (lots more to look at if you have time)

Is ON DEMAND so you can fit it easily into busy schedules

Is a “one-stop-shop” for birth education and has a bundle with breastfeeding, nutrition and more!
